Kate Middleton’s non-negotiable ‘stern’ rule for George, Charlotte and Louis

The Princess of Wales is prioritising one major aspect of her three kids’ childhoods, which she believes is “as important as maths and sport”

Princess Kate has often spoken about her three young children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – and how she and Prince William are raising the future royal generation and instilling important boundaries as they grow up, while also juggling their own responsibilities within the Firm.

But despite the pressure of bringing up their kids in the public eye, the dedicated parents are known to prioritise open communication, a calm atmosphere, and empathy with their young children. And while they, like many parents, are hoping their children will excel academically, Kate is prioritising another major aspect over their school grades.

It appears that instilling sound moral values into George, Charlotte, and Louis is high on the list of Kate and William’s parenting priorities. “My parents taught me about the importance of qualities like kindness, respect and honesty and I realise how central values like these have been to me throughout my life,” Kate previously said.

“That is why William and I want to teach our little children… just how important these things are as they grow up. In my view, it is just as important as excelling at maths or sport.”

Kate’s recent battle with cancer has only reinforced those core beliefs, as she said in a video last year to announce the end of her cancer treatment: “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”

In 2023, the princess also spoke with radio host Roman Kemp about the challenges of modern parenthood, admitting that raising children today is ‘tough’.

“It’s not about the number of toys they’ve got or the number or sort of trips that you go on with them,” Kate, a passionate advocate of early years development, said. “It’s just making sure that they’ve got the right emotional support around them, and that comes from the adults in their lives.”

Prince William also spoke about their family unit in a candid interview with Eugene Levy on the Apple TV show The Reluctant Traveller in October, revealing how Kate’s cancer battle challenged their family but admitted they are “constantly learning and adapting”.

He said: “Everyone has their own coping mechanisms for these sorts of things, and children are constantly learning and adapting. We try to make sure we give them the security and the safety that they need.”

“We’re a very open family, so we talk about things that bother us, and things that trouble us, but you never quite know the knock-on effects that it can have. It’s just important to be there for each other and to kind of reassure the children that everything is okay.”

Despite all the tough times of the past year, William admitted he is determined to overcome it – and heaped praise on his family.

He said: “You know life is sent to test us as well and it definitely can be challenging at times, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are. You know, I’m so proud of my wife and my father, for how they’ve handled all of last year. My children have managed brilliantly as well.”
