Green Flag has recommended a less obvious button that drivers should press upon entering their vehicle to help eliminate windscreen condensation fast. The chilly weather has arrived in force, leaving countless drivers grappling with frozen windscreens and excessive steam that hampers clear vision before their trips.

It’s absolutely crucial to guarantee all your car windows are clear, which is emphasised by the Highway Code. The code cautions “before you set off, you must be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows” and “ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible”.

This is additionally backed by section 41D of the Road Traffic Act 1988, which establishes it as a legal requirement to see the road ahead clearly before setting off.

Numerous individuals look to social media seeking advice and techniques to accelerate the de-misting and de-frosting process, with a vast array of tips and apparent shortcuts to assist getting the job done.

Emergency breakdown and car recovery specialist, Green Flag, has detailed the supposedly quickest technique to eliminate condensation when you first climb into your motor on a frosty winter’s morning.

Condensation occurs when warm air meets a chilled surface. On X, Green Flag shared the guidance with the caption: “Whack on the kettle. Just don’t use it for your windscreen.

“Treat yourself to a brew and read through some handy hacks for these freezing mornings. And if your vehicle conks out in the cold, don’t forget that you can use our app to get 24/7 help.”

Green Flag urges drivers to activate their air-conditioning to prevent their windows from misting up, although the instinctive craving for warmth may lead people towards the heating dial instead.

The breakdown recovery firm declared “air-con’s your friend”, and said: “First: turn the fan on full. Ensure the air flow is pointed at the windows and turn the heating up.

“Most importantly, make sure the air-conditioning is turned on – this will dry the air. Turn the recirculation function off.

“That ensures dry air from outside is drawn in rather than simply pushing the moist air inside around. Opening your windows slightly will also help to disperse the moisture.”

It also encourages drivers to “be patient” as it will take a few minutes for the condensation to fully disappear.

Green Flag continued: “Driving with just little portholes to peer out of is against the law, not to mention incredibly dangerous.”

Never begin your journey unless your windscreen and windows are entirely clear. If you drive with a restricted view, you could face a penalty or, worse still, be involved in an accident.
