Meghan Markle used her acting skills to put on an excellent show for her audience and ‘prove herself one of the best storytellers in the business’ during a recent visit to a children’s hospital
Meghan Markle proved herself to be “one of the best storytellers in the business” with her recent surprise visit to a children’s hospital.
The Duchess of Sussex was pictured reading to patients and staff at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) as part of a literacy campaign. Meghan joined the hospital’s month-long campaign, Make March Matter, last month (March 21) as she read books including Rosie the Riveter, Pete the Cat, and I Saw a Cat. Mum of two Meghan was pictured alongside the children with many laughing and enjoying the stories as part of the CHLA Literally Healing scheme.
Now body language expert Judi James has revealed that Meghan deployed her acting skills perfectly for the appearance to deliver an “enthralling” experience for all in attendance. She explained: “Meghan proves herself to be one of the best storytellers in the business here, doing more than just pulling on her acting chops to deliver a wonderfully engaging, exciting and even enthralling reading of more than one book at a children’s hospital.”

Judi also detailed how Meghan used amplified upper-facial expressions to make the event more engaging as the lower part of her face was covered by a medical mask. She said: “She more than overcomes the problem of wearing a mask by doubling up the eye and eyebrow and tonal work, scanning the group and registering personal excitement with each turn of the page.
“She is neither inhibited or patronising here as many celebrity storytellers can be. She uses the trick of empathy to suggest she is seeing the stories for the first time too, allowing her to encourage and mirror the reactions of the children in front of her.”
Judi also gave Meghan props for her people skills and talent for performing with a live audience when it comes to children, suggesting that using her maternal instincts could benefit her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard. She concluded: “This is clearly something that Meghan is very good at, especially with a live audience. It takes her away from Royal/Hollywood celebrity mode and could suggest a more family/parental appeal for her existing or future brand.”
The appearance was part of the CHLA’s Literally Healing reading programme which gifts families at CHLA more than 65,000 books annually and provides a unique opportunity to promote literacy, as well as supporting and strengthening patients’ families through additional therapeutic literary resources. Meghan’s reading stint comes after the Duchess of Sussex is thought to be anxious about a possible return to the UK alongside husband Prince Harry.
Meghan has been back to the UK since the pair stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 but it’s been on rare occasions which included the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II. However she did not return for King Charles III’s coronation last year, which Harry attended alone.
