A British tourist was gang-raped by three men after her drink was spiked during a family night out in Benidorm, a Spanish court has heard as a long-awaited trial gets underway.

The alleged victim told the Provincial Court of Alicante via videolink from the UK that she left a bar to smoke on October 1, 2016 and was snatched by three men who took her to a field and gang-raped her.

She says the last thing she remembers is stepping outside before she woke up face-down in the backseat of a car with her clothes unbuttoned, feeling pain in her legs and sexual organs.

The Prosecutor’s Office is now asking for 12 years and three months in prison for the three alleged perpetrators, accused of sexual assault and theft. The accused have pleaded innocent, claiming the act was consensual, according to local media.

Benidorm, a city on the east coast of Spain popular with British tourists. The alleged victim of a sexual assault says she was attacked while out with family in the city in October 2016

The alleged victim believes the men slipped something in her drink before sweeping her off the street to attack her.

She says while her memory is cloudy, she remembers leaving a family event to smoke and waking up in a car with her legs outside of the vehicle.

She saw ‘three or four men’ standing outside the car, she said.

When she got out, one of them said he was ‘sorry’, according to the alleged victim.

The woman fled and returned to her hotel, where she and her mother called the police.

As the men pleaded their innocence, the alleged victim said she had taken three or four drinks before waking up in the car in pain.

One defendant, a Spaniard, admitted having had sexual relations with the alleged victim during the hearing, but said it was consensual.

He said the encounter led from ‘her initiative’ when the other two defendants were elsewhere buying cocaine.

Another acknowledged the discovery of his DNA on the victim’s clothing, maintaining that he pulled her out of the car because she was ‘very drunk’.

He said he had only taken the other two to the car, knowing them from living in the same neighbourhood.

The third alleged attacker chose not to give a statement.

The group is also accused of the robbery of a watch and a ring that the victim was wearing, valued at 497 euros (£443.40).
