A woman who was mauled by two Rottweilers and sustained wounds to her arms and legs has died weeks later.

Marie Stevens, 40, was attacked at around 5.45pm on Friday, August 18 and taken to hospital where she was treated and later discharged.

But police were called on September 3 by the North West Ambulance Service to Ms Stevens’ house on Holden Road, in Brighton-le-Sands, to a report she had collapsed and died at home.

A 41-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman from Netherton have been arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury.

Both suspects were later bailed with conditions, police confirmed.

A post mortem determined the primary cause of death was a pulmonary embolism.

Ms Stevens’s family have been informed.

The tragic news comes just days after a three-year-old girl was left in hospital with serious injuries after her face was mauled in a vicious dog attack while she was playing outside a pub.

Witnesses described seeing the young girl outside the Market Tavern in Kirkby, northeast of Liverpool, earlier in the day dressed in ‘pretty pink’, while they claimed the ‘big dog’ kept having to be pulled back by its owners.

Merseyside Police were called to the pub in Newtown Gardens just after 3.15pm on Saturday afternoon following a report that a dog had attacked a child.

The toddler was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for treatment of her injuries, which were understood to be serious but not life-threatening.
