Breakfast TV ratings Australia: The Today show’s bold plan to get to No. 1

Inside the Today show’s bold plan to get to No. 1: Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon have a ‘sink-or-swim attitude’ as they vow to win back viewers from Sunrise and ABC News Breakfast

Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon are committed to reversing the Today show’s fortunes after a recent dive in the ratings, with insiders saying the co-hosts are prepared to ‘pull out all the stops’ to catch up with their rivals.

The Channel Nine show recently suffered a major blow when it placed third behind Sunrise and ABC News Breakfast for a whole week for the first time in 13 years.

But despite this setback, a well-placed source told New Idea on Monday that Langdon, 42, and Stefanovic, 47, are determined to crawl back to No. 1.

‘Karl is the sort of bloke who would never bail out of a sinking ship,’ they said.

‘Being behind in the ratings makes him and Ally only want to work harder to get back on top. It’s sink or swim for [them].’

The insider continued: ‘Knowing their tenacity and professionalism, they’ll pull out all the stops to bring back their valued viewers who might have temporarily wandered over to other networks.’

It follows rumours that Stefanovic, who is up for the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality this year, could be swapping breakfast TV for the boardroom.

Woman’s Day reported last month that the father of four was considering stepping away from the Today show in favour of a job where he could ‘give back’ to the community, while still filing occasional stories for 60 Minutes.

However, Stefanovic later dismissed the rumour as ‘absolutely bulls**t’ during an interview with 3AW radio host Neil Mitchell.

While the partnership of Stefanovic and Langdon has drawn praise from viewers, Today is still falling behind Channel Seven’s Sunrise.

But it wasn’t until earlier this month that ‘alarm bells started ringing’ when the program placed third behind Sunrise and ABC News Breakfast for an entire week.

Today’s metro average for the week commencing May 2 was 176,000.

By contrast, ABC News Breakfast had 195,000 viewers and Sunrise led the pack with 241,000, according to The Daily Telegraph.

But there’s still a chance Today could make a comeback, as it has recovered from similar dips before and has even been known to win the ratings on the east coast.

Sunrise is co-anchored by David ‘Kochie’ Koch and Natalie Barr. The co-hosts of ABC News Breakfast are Michael Rowland and Lisa Millar.
