A woman has shared a simple hack to help you save money on windscreen washer fluid, by making your own using just three common household ingredients most people already own
Good visibility is key for safe motoring. That’s why it’s crucial to ensure your car is always topped up with windscreen washer fluid, so you’re not caught short when you need it most.
With the UK recently hit by an Arctic blast and freezing temperatures, it’s even more vital to keep a good supply of washing liquid on hand, as winter weather tends to make cars dirtier. While your windscreen wipers can clear water and perhaps a few minor contaminants from your glass, you shouldn’t rely solely on them to keep your view clear as larger debris (like bird droppings) can damage the rubber.
However, like many other things, windscreen washers have become pricier to purchase. To help you save a bit of cash, Kelly Sonnenburg from the Weather Network has shared a handy DIY tip for making your own windscreen cleaner liquid, using just three common household ingredients.
“Winter driving season is here and that means messy roads and even messier windscreens,” she said. “You’re gonna be going through a ton of windscreen washer fluid this season.
She then added: “Looking to save a few bucks? Ditch the shop-bought and make your own.”
How to make your own windscreen washer
Kelly was then seen concocting her own windscreen washing liquid, using only three ingredients that most people will already have at home. All you need to do is add four cups (946ml) of water, one half of a cup (118ml) of rubbing alcohol, and a teaspoon of washing-up liquid to a bowl before mixing it all together.
Kelly also mentioned you can add a few drops of blue food colouring if you fancy achieving the same blue shade as the shop-bought version, though this isn’t essential.”
Fill up an empty container, and it looks like the real thing,” she said as she held up a jug of the mixture. “It cleans like the real thing, too.”
So is it genuinely that straightforward to create? They went on to clarify that the rubbing alcohol will help stop the mixture from freezing.
Meanwhile the water and washing-up liquid will create the ideal blend to clean your windscreen.
