Edu slams critics ‘making jokes’ about Arteta with Premier League title now in sight
rsenal technical director Edu says people would have “made jokes” about the club’s process before this season.
While the Gunners are leading the way in the Premier League title race, Mikel Arteta has not always enjoyed an easy ride of things.
Despite winning the FA Cup only months after replacing Unai Emery, Arteta’s first two seasons in charge saw them finish eighth. Last season showed signs of real progress, though Arsenal collapsed towards the end of it and were beaten to Champions League qualification by rivals Tottenham.
Throughout the difficult period, Arteta urged doubters to “trust the process” before predicting back in 2021 that it would soon “bang” after the pandemic.
Building on last season’s strides forward and having lost only twice all season, they now lead champions Manchester City by five points after a record-breaking campaign and are in pole position in the title race.
Arteta and forward Bukayo Saka were among those celebrated at the London Football Awards, scooping the Manager and Young Player of the Year gongs respectively.
At the event at Camden’s Roundhouse, Edu said: “When we started, we were talking a lot about a process.
“People were making jokes about our process. I think we were quite clear about all the steps and what we went through. We knew we were going to go through some challenging periods because we had to make some unpopular decisions which were going to cause some instability.
“But importantly, internally we were quite together to understand the process and now we are where we are.”
