‘Learning that paprika is just dried and crushed red capsicum was really shocking. I don’t know why I thought there was a paprika tree somewhere,’ they posted on the page.

The seasoning, which features heavily in Hungarian and Spanish cooking, is made by drying capsicum and then grinding it into a fine dust.

This fact shocked and confused many, with hundreds admitting they hate the vegetable but adore paprika.

Foodies couldn’t understand how paprika comes in different variations if it’s made from the same vegetable.

However the spice is made from a variety of different type of peppers, including hot chili peppers, poblano peppers, sweet peppers, aleppo peppers and more

How to make paprika at home:

1. Choose at least two large red capsicum.

2. Peel the vegetable, remove the seeds and the white parts, then slice it thinly.

3. The slices should then be spread out thinly on baking parchment on a baking tray or dehydrator so they don’t touch.

4. The tray of capsicum slices can then be left to cook in the oven overnight on the lowest heat setting, with the oven door slightly ajar. Or they can be dried in a dehydrator according to the machine settings.

5. Once fully dehydrated, the capsicum should be removed from the oven and let to cool off completely.

6. If there are any big pieces they should be removed or crushed manually.

6. The capsicum can then be crushed using a mortar and pestle or electric coffee grinder.

7. The spice should then be stored in a cool, dark area in an airtight container, preferably one that won’t let light in like a metal tin.

8. The seasoning can last between six months and two years if stored correctly.

Sweet paprika is a mild spice used on foods like potato salad, hot paprika is often used to add spice to meat and stews, and smoked paprika is used to add a mild smoky flavour to dishes.

Many people have begun to make paprika at home using a dehydrator or cooking it on a low heat overnight in the oven.

The task has been described as easy, but time consuming, and the spice requires many capsicums for a small amount.

Two large red capsicums will only make around two teaspoons of paprika.
