‘I’ve never thought about taking my wooden spoons and actually kind of cleaning them,’ she said.
‘I’ve had some of these for years, and now I’m very scared. This is one of my oldest ones right here, and you can tell because of the black tips.’
Once the water was boiled, she took her utensils and put them inside the water, leaving them bubbling for several minutes:
‘Okay, all done. Let’s see what has happened,’ she said.
‘Oh my god, I can’t even see the bottom any more. This is so gross.’
The video has gone viral and has been viewed more than 49million times, prompting thousands more to try it for themselves at home.
‘I personally just never use wooden utensils as they are porous and absorb,’ one person said.
‘I’m definitely doing this. All the curries I make with wooden spoons I can only imagine,’ another added.
A third wrote: ‘This is the reason why I hate wooden anything’.
The wooden spoon test has resurfaced on social media in recent years, with many mothers sharing their results
A mum-of-two has revealed why you should always deep clean your wooden spoon after she discovered hidden cooking oils in her utensil. The simple kitchen trick involves soaking the spoons in boiling water for up to 20 minutes to see what oils seep out of the wood
Previously, Melbourne mum Chantel Mila said you should be deep cleaning your wooden spoons regularly:
‘When was the last time you deep cleaned your wooden spoon?’ Chantel said.
According to Matt Preston, his method is to remove the accumulation of cooking oils over the years. It was amazing to see how much was hidden in there.
‘Hot water releases cooking oils trapped in the spoon. The hidden oil will float to the surface. The soaking helps deep clean inside the wood while usual washing only washes the outside.’
The mum shared a TikTok video showing herself testing out former MasterChef judge Matt Preston’s cleaning method of soaking used wooden spoons in a cup of boiling water
The celebrity food critic came up with the ‘wooden spoon test’ several years ago to help home cooks determine whether or not it’s time to bin their wooden spoon.
‘On the surface a perfect present but stick an old one in a cup of boiling water to see what fate awaits all wooden spoons. Give it a sniff. Phew, stinky! And you were going to stir your custard with that,’ Preston said in a piece for Delicious.
‘Ask for a $10 silicon spatula instead. They’re hygienic, heat-resistant and flexible, so they are great for getting into the corner of a pan or getting every last skerrick out of a bowl.’
