A wide array of energy suppliers are expected to issue a £150 discount to millions of households this winter. It comes as the Warm Home Discount is set to be expanded following a previous restriction on eligibility last year.
Roughly six million households will now receive the Warm Home Discount after the government confirmed that an extra 2.7 million households will be entitled this winter. Energy customers who are eligible for the scheme will see a £150 discount applied to their account.
Prepayment meter customers will receive a top-up voucher, which can be used where they usually top up their account for their discount. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “Millions of families will get vital support with the cost of living this coming winter, demonstrating this government’s commitment to put money in people’s pockets through our Plan for Change.”
Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount 2025?
Energy customers in England and Wales were previously only eligible for the Warm Home Discount if they received payments for the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, have high energy costs, or receive payments for a qualifying means-tested benefit.
This made the eligibility criteria restrictive for many customers who did not claim any qualifying benefits but were still struggling to pay for their energy. However, the government has since confirmed that it will remove the high-cost-to-heat threshold, allowing all households to be eligible if a means-tested benefit recipient is named on the energy bill.
In Scotland, you can receive the discount if you claim a means-tested benefit or the Guarentee Credit element of Pension Credit. While the discount is given automatically to Pension Credit claimants, those who qualify by other means may need to apply for the discount through their energy supplier.
