They’re also regularly used by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince William and Kate Middleton, and Queen Camilla. They also have current collaborations with The National Gallery and Morris & Co. The Huntsman is one of the brand’s classics, and it’s designed for the famously changeable British weather. When open, the Fulton umbrella has a span of 106 centimetres.
The umbrella has double ribs and a 14-millimetre diametre shaft for extra strength. It uses a high-performance polyester pongee fabruc, and has a stylish dark wood handle. That handle is decorated with a shiny Fulton logo plaque. The steel frame is manual and black plated. If you don’t want to match the royals, there are plenty of other options.

At Argos, the Windproof Golf Umbrella is £14. Billed as ‘great quality and great value’, the umbrella has a 144-centimetre canopy big enough for two people. It uses flexible fibreglass ribs to make itself windproof, and has an easy-grip handle. The golf umbrella weighs in at less than half a kilo, with a total weight of 0.48kg.
The Fulton umbrella has 4.6 stars on Amazon from 1,185 reviews. One person said: “I’ve been wanting one of these for ages, and just though well let’s get one, to my amazement it’s absolutely stunning, well-made and especially when open it’s very strong, easy to put back together. A great assist to us men.” Another wrote “Good for British days. This is a fabulous umbrella just how I remember a proper umbrella being.”

“Fulton is the brand of umbrella that I will always buy after owning several in the past, all of very great quality,” a third said. “I bought this specific umbrella whilst away as I had forgotten my own. The first thing to consider is the size of this umbrella, being full size this could be overly large for many and Fulton sells many other very high-quality compact umbrellas. I would be incredibly surprised if anyone bought this and was disappointed with the build quality in the hood of the umbrella. The struts and mechanisms are sturdy and hold the material incredibly taut.
“The only point that should be considered before purchasing this and the only downside that I have identified from this umberella would be the appearance of the wooden handle. This doesn’t look as premium as others, likely to keep costs down. If this is being bought as a fashion accessory, this could be an issue and a higher-quality handle would likely only come from a more expensive umbrella. Most importantly, this umbrella is yet to turn inside out.”
The quality didn’t impress everyone, and one disappointed customer said: “Waste of money. Actually owned it for over a year but only used it about seven times total and it totally broke on the seventh time. Trouble with it is that it’s really easy to over-extend it when opening it so it turns inside out. There really should be a stopper to prevent this from happening.”
But another rave review added “It was hard to find a decent umbrella on Amazon. I spent a long time comparing various types and reading reviews. I feel content with my choice as this one, in particular, looks elegant, has a good build, feels sturdy in the wind; and comes in a decent price.” And one more shopper concluded simply: “Brilliant, now I know how James Bond felt.”
