Londoners are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to picturesque getaways just a short train journey away. Some of these destinations are well-trodden paths, while others remain undiscovered treasures. One such treasure is Osea Island, a stunning location that could easily rival any overseas holiday spot, and it’s only about an hour away from the capital.
A favourite holiday spot amongst celebrities, Osea Island is nestled 10 miles from the heart of Chelmsford in Essex. Tucked away on the Blackwater Estuary, the island offers a range of accommodation options and a wealth of open green spaces ready to be discovered. From cosy cottages and charming flats to grand manor houses, there’s something to cater to everyone’s taste.
Access to the island, situated a mile east of Northey Island, is via a tidal causeway that only emerges during periods of low tide. This means you can find yourself isolated at certain times of the day – however, a river taxi service is available at high tide, provided you book ahead.
The tranquil beauty of the island calls out to those who wish to escape the relentless hustle and bustle of London life. Home to over 3,000 mature trees and a variety of wildlife, its surroundings offer a stark contrast to the urban jungle of the capital.
Here, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the calming chorus of native wildlife and staring up at glittering night skies, whilst the lapping waves create the perfect backdrop to your retreat.
Intriguingly, there are two recording studios on the island that have hosted A-list celebrities including Rihanna, Charli XCX, The Weeknd, Jessie J, and Tinie Tempah, all visiting the island to make music. Beyond recording sessions, the island serves as a venue for exclusive private gatherings, alongside film and television shoots.
One Google review said: “I’ve had the privilege to work here for the past two days and what a fascinating place it surely is. A private island with a road that disappears under the water at high tide. It was brilliant for us as we were stranded on the island, so we decided to investigate and what a wonderful place it is. I can imagine coming and staying in the various accommodation it’s a really beautiful island and would be a dog walker’s dream it’s isolated and green.”
The stunning Manor House is perhaps the most impressive accommodation option on the island, with room for up to 20 guests. The Village features an array of cottages in different sizes, providing opportunities to socialise with fellow island guests whilst preserving that coveted feeling of privacy.
Whilst the majority of lodgings are self-catered, there are a handful of dining options on offer. The Puffin is the island’s local pub, and the Bomb Factory, located in a former World War One torpedo store, offers an intriguing menu. Additionally, there’s The Shack Cafe for lighter bites.
The island boasts a rich history, having served as a torpedo base during the First World War, accommodating 2,000 sailors, and was occupied by the British Army during the Second World War. To reach this historical gem from London, it’s a swift 50-minute train journey from Liverpool Street, followed by a pre-arranged taxi ride to the island.
