It’s been a summer to remember with no fewer than four heatwaves in London, and this week looks set for another dry and sunny spell as temperature are set to peak in the mid 20s, with little chance of rainfall. Today (Monday, August 18) promises to be a mild start to the week, with light clouds and gentle breeze, along with a maximum temperature of 23C by late afternoon.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) is also tipped for “sunny intervals and a gentle breeze” with maximum temperatures reaching 24C, while similarly dry weather and light breezes will dominate Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, seeing slightly cooler peaks between 20 and 22C.
The first sign of rain is expected on Saturday, August 23, according to BBC Weather, with low precipitation in the morning from 8am and light rainfall between 11am and 1pm. Light rain is expected to return on Sunday afternoon between 2pm and 5pm, with more light showers early next week at 9am on Monday, August 25, and further rain on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 26.
These showers are expected to be very light, with the heaviest rains on Tuesday, August 26, predicted at just 27 per cent precipitation, BBC Weather reports.
An amber warning was issued at the start of last week for London’s fourth heatwave in just one year, as residents were urged to take steps to cope with the extreme conditions.
Pressure was put upon Mayor Sadiq Khan to prioritise measures to protect Londoners’ homes, with many households struggling to deal with the intense weather. Water fountains, more trees, and cooler new-builds are just some of the strategies being proposed.
City Hall is currently developing London’s Heat Risk Delivery Plan, which aims to help the city tackle rising temperatures more effectively.
As heatwaves become more frequent, London’s efforts to adapt and protect its residents are more crucial than ever.
