A used car expert has suggested three surprising cars a person could buy for the price of a brand new Range Rover, with one of the models being a luxury super coupe
A motoring expert has suggested three incredible motors you could snap up for the same price as a brand new Range Rover.
As the cost of living crisis has tightened its grip and salaries have failed to keep pace, increasing numbers of motorists are turning to the second-hand car market for their next vehicle purchase.
The appeal lies in the fact that, in many instances, pre-owned vehicles come with significantly lower price tags than their showroom-fresh equivalents.
This means savvy shoppers can bag themselves a real steal with a bit of hunting around. But what if you had a whopping £100,000 burning a hole in your pocket instead of the usual £10,000 car budget?.
This was precisely the challenge tackled by Auto Express specialist Ellis Hyde, who set out to curate a three-car collection for the cost of a new Range Rover – currently sitting at approximately £100,000 as of 2025.
Ellis’s first pick was a Bentley Continental GT, a luxury grand tourer crafted by the prestigious British marque.
Fresh from the factory, these magnificent machines command eye-watering six-figure sums, yet Ellis discovered one priced at just £44,995.
Explaining his selection, he noted it delivers prospective owners “style, stupendous speed and a pillowy ride, which makes it the perfect car for crossing counties, countries or even entire continents if you’re lucky enough to have the time”.
He continued: “This particular example we found in our classified had covered just over 26,000 miles, yet the gorgeous interior appears factory fresh.”
The second motor Ellis selected was at the opposite end of the coupe spectrum.
Whilst the Bentley was engineered to traverse continents, the Lotus Exige V6 S is crafted to master apexes and sharp bends. The model featured was available for just £39,995.
Explaining his reasoning behind this choice, Ellis said: “While the big Bentley offers everything you might want from a car in terms of creature comforts, the Lotus Exige strips it all back to deliver the most thrilling driving experience it can.
“If you think modern cars are too complicated and fussy, this Exige V6 S has a good old-fashioned six-speed manual gearbox, unassisted steering and barely any amenities to distract you from the road ahead.”
Alongside selecting a Lotus and Bentley, Ellis chose to complete a British top three with his final pick, a pre-owned Range Rover Sport priced at just £18,995.
He commented: “The car we’ve found might not be the full fat, flagship Range Rover, but the Range Rover Sport is still an incredibly impressive luxury SUV that’s comfortable yet dynamic, and extremely capable off road.”
While Ellis plumped for a second-hand SUV for his third selection, another specialist, car mechanic James Goodhand, told the Express he would choose a pre-owned estate over a used SUV.
He remarked: “Largely personal prejudice here, but I always advise buying an estate car rather than the equivalent SUV. Who needs the extra height?
“Take Volvo’s big car offering for example – you can buy an XC90 SUV or a V90 estate. The V90 is a good 25% cheaper used, it’s got more room inside, its faster, handles better, uses less fuel, and you’re far more likely to be let out of side turnings in one!”.
