Prince William and Prince Harry are both reportedly in the running to play a key role in the life of one of their closest friend’s new baby, which could see the warring brothers brought together for the first time in several years.

Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, and his wife Olivia welcomed their baby daughter Cosima to the world just weeks ago, with a christening for the tiny tot yet to be confirmed.

But with the role of godfather still up for grabs, the Duke seemingly has the power to help mend the rift between the two princes, which could be the start of a royal reconciliation between the Sussexes and the royal family at large. It comes after it emerged Meghan Markle’s ‘inappropriate’ living request was ‘firmly denied’ by late Queen.

Hugh is one of William and Harry’s closest friends, and is godfather to both Prince George and Prince Archie. According to the Sunday Times, it is understood William will be asked to be a godfather, with Hugh and his wife also considering asking Harry too.

Harry and William have been at odds with each other since Harry and Meghan quit their royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California, many of the mutual friendships held with both princes have been impacted.

Cosima was born on July 27, with both Harry and William reportedly sending their congratulations to the couple, however a date for the baby girl’s christening has yet to be confirmed.

Selecting both brothers as godfathers to his firstborn would be seen by many in royal circles as an attempt by Hugh to thaw the princes’ frosty relationship, after William and Harry have not spoken since the period of the Queen’s death in 2022.

William attended the couples wedding at Chester Cathedral in 2024, and even served as an usher during the service. After much deliberation, the newlyweds chose not to invite Harry and Meghan to their nuptials over fears it would be too awkward with the warring members of the royal family.

At the time, a friend of the brothers said: “It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both.

“He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding. He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia, and doesn’t want any awkwardness.”

In a bombshell interview with the BBC in May, Harry revealed that he is eager to reconcile with his father in light of his cancer diagnosis, but admitted: “Some members of my family will never forgive me.”

He said: “There is no point in continuing to fight any more… But I would love a reconciliation. I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me.”
