Three of the popular apps, which have millions of users worldwide, are currently out of service for thousands

WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook are all down as tens of thousands report issues worldwide.

Instagram outages skyrocketed to more than 2,500 as of 7pm this evening. Data for WhatsApp showed as many as 60,000 users affected at around the same time. Facebook was hit by far fewer reports at around 1,522.

The outage is not only in the UK, with users worldwide apparently experiencing issues. According to reports, the application is not allowing users to send or receive messages.

Facebook users on DownDetector say they are unable to approve or decline requests. One Instagram user said their highlights disappeared from their profile and they are unable to see who has viewed their story, one of the app’s popular features.

WhatsApp, nor its parent company Meta, are yet to comment on the malfunction. Instagram and Facebook, which are owned by the same company, have not shared any further updates.

Though users reported widespread problems, they appeared able to get back online a short time after. Some said the platforms were operating slower than normal as they became available again.

It comes just weeks after four of the biggest apps went down. On March 5, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have all left people experiencing issues, while the Google app was also reportedly down. DownDetector shows more than 150,000 users have had trouble getting onto Facebook in the past hour, while there have also been 25,000 reports of issues with Instagram.

The outage also hit adjoining Facebook Messenger with more than 6,000 complaints. Problems began when users noticed they were being kicked out of their accounts when trying to use the apps. They were unable to log back in, while the Instagram feed was coming up blank for many.
