As the cost and living crisis continues, many shoppers are feeling the pinch especially when it comes to food and drink. Reports suggest the annual rate of food price inflation has shot up to 4.5%
A man ventured into Tesco and was stunned after spotting a two-pack of the supermarketās āFinestā sirloin steaks being sold for a much higher price than he expected. The cost of living crisis continues to affect shoppers up and down the country, with food and drink a particular bone of contention for many.
Thereās been reported increases on a plethora of household essentials and cupboard fillers, with the Economics Observatory stating: āThe annual rate of food price inflation in the UK has accelerated to 4.5%ā. Unsurprisingly, more and more people are taking note of prices when doing their shopping.
One man went into Tesco and was caught off guard by the price of its Tesco Finest Sirloin Steaks, which are being sold at £15.25 for a 454g pack of two steaks. He shared a picture of the price tag on the shelf of the popular supermarket and shared it on social media.
On Reddit, he asked: āIs this insane or am I out of touch? Ā£15.25 for a sirloin? Thatās just insane,” going on to claim: “They [used] to be about 7 quid not [too] long ago.ā
According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), fluctuating prices on meat are normal.
It states: āAround the world farmgate cattle prices vary, affected by various factors, most obviously supply and demand.
āSome of these factors are more local in nature, and might include logistical and supply chain issues, such as transportation costs between farm, abattoir, cutting plant and dispatch location, or problems with processing capacity.ā
Beneath the manās claims on Reddit, fellow shoppers were keen to share their thoughts.
One person said: āAh, itās hit Tesco too. I was baffled when I saw steak prices in Sainsburyās last week. Theyāve rocketed overnight.ā
Another said: āIf Iām paying that much for a steak from a supermarket Iām gonna go M&S.ā
Offering a different perspective, someone else commented: āAs someone who works in a catering butchers, you would not believe how expensive beef has gotten recently, it’s absolutely insaneā.
A fourth person commented: āIf you look at the price per kg then itās about the same as what it is in other supermarkets.ā
A fifth agreed: āThatās a big steak, probably serves two unless youāve got a huge appetite, itās 30 day a dry aged and a decent cut. Itās too expensive for me and I wouldnāt buy it, but itās not out of step with the cost of beef steak these days. Meat is expensive.ā
Another said: āBrother. That’s a 16oz Tesco Finest, itās gonna be expensive. Just go to the butcher insteadā.
Someone else claimed: āPretty much everything that could be considered a source of protein has increased massively, meat, fish, cheese and eggs.ā
Many suggested visiting a local butcher instead. One person shared: āIsnāt the butcher even more expensive though?
āI once bought a few lamb chops from the butcher and practically passed out when I heard the price! Thought heād added an extra 0 for a laugh!!ā
