Prince Harry is expected to arrive in the UK next week for a charity event – and with a possible royal reunion on the cards – we asked Mirror readers if they think Meghan Markle should join him
Prince Harry will return to the UK next week, where he is poised to reunite with King Charles for the first time in 20 months – and we asked Mirror readers whether they believe Meghan Markle should accompany him on the trip.
The Duke of Sussex will arrive in London on September 8 to attend the WellChild Awards, which also takes place on the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. It marks Harry’s first visit to the UK since his failed court hearing over security protection in April, when His Majesty was in Italy for a state visit.
However, the monarch will be in the UK during Harry’s visit, which suggests that a father and son reunion could be on the cards for the first time since February 2024. The pair met last year at Clarence House after the King went public with his cancer diagnosis – a reunion that lasted just 30 minutes.
Reports of a royal meeting come after it emerged that Meredith Maines, Harry’s chief communications officer, and Liam Maguire, who runs the Sussex’s UK public relations team, met the King’s communications secretary Tobyn Andreae at the Royal Over-Seas League in July. This was seen as a major step towards opening dialogue and discussions included the possibility of Harry receiving direct updates on his father’s health and coordination to avoid clashes between Sussex projects and royal engagements.
Speaking to the Mirror, a US source said: “For the first time in a long time, there’s a genuine sense that reconciliation is within reach. Prince Harry ’s team and the Palace have opened a line of communication, and there is every hope that father and son will see one another when the Duke returns to London in September.”
They added: “After 20 months apart, and with the King continuing his treatment, the feeling is that the time is right to take that step. This is not about grand gestures or set-piece meetings – it’s about a simple face-to-face conversation between a father and his son. The priority is privacy and dignity, but also ensuring the door stays open for further dialogue. As for Harry and William, though, any chance of reconciliation between them has been rejected out of hand.”
While a meeting could be on the cards, Meghan Markle will maintain her self-imposed exile from Britain, opting to stay in California with the couple’s two children, Archie and Lilibet. Charles has not seen his grandchildren since June 2022, when the Sussexes returned for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
We asked Mirror readers if they think Meghan should join Harry when he arrives in the UK next week, and 90 percent said ‘No’. Around 12,657 took part in our poll and a whopping 11,396 said the Duchess should not accompany her husband.
Sharing their thoughts in the comments section, one user penned: “Definitely not, her disgraceful behaviour towards the Royal Family, and still throwing skits and digs at the Royal Family. Better staying in Montecito.”
Another echoed: “She is not welcome here. No one who has disrespected and insulted the late Queen should ever even have the choice to come back to the UK.”
“Absolutely NOT, after the way she is treated by the Royal Family and UK press, no-way,” wrote a third, while another agreed: “She has no reason to be there, she will make it worse. She’s disgraced the royal family, her behaviour is appalling towards them.”
While others expressed their concerns for Meghan’s safety, as one person shared: “I believe the UK is not safe for Harry and especially for Meghan with all the hate, lies and slander that is being heaped upon her some.”
Another added: “She has no place in this country ever. I would not feel comfortable & would be fearful for her safety such is the level of animosity she has provoked by her outbursts & attitude.”
Meanwhile, 10 percent said that the Duchess is welcome to the UK, as one reader stated: “I voted that Meghan should join Harry in the U.K because only then could their children come as well. Harry DOES get full security when he travels on a planned visit. The King will see Harry if the children are there but Meghan will say no.”
A second wrote: “I’m another who would like to see Harry, Meghan and the children visit the King at Balmoral – without the Cambridges in attendance. Any bad blood that has happened is mostly because of lies told about Meghan to force her into exile.”
While a third posted: “I would love to see her back BUT it’s not safe for her in the UK,” another voiced: “I, for one, would love to see them return for visits as and when they like. There is too much nastiness in the world as it is without adding to it.”
Harry is said to have barred his wife from visiting alongside him due to safety concerns, with insiders likening it to his ban on her visiting the UK since their taxpayer-funded security was cut when they moved to the US.
While the King has expressed a willingness to reconcile, relations between Harry and the Prince of Wales remain deeply strained. A separate source added: “William feels Harry has repeatedly chosen public exposure over private resolution and that the Royal Family can’t keep being dragged into the headlines every time there’s a new contract to promote. “
