When visiting a home away from home, you’ll likely want to treat the place with respect by cleaning up after yourself and giving it a bit of a spruce before you leave – just like you would if you were in your own property. But one cleaner pointed out that not everybody feels this way, sharing the most disgusting things she’d ever seen in a holiday rental.

The woman, who posts on TikTok as @apluscleaning0, shared in a video that she’s seen some “wild stuff” during her time as a professional cleaner. This has included a cupboard to some knickers that looked like they had been soiled, and the cleaner said this was one of the “worst” things she’d ever seen.

She shared that she services over 80 holiday rentals, joking that because of this, she was always “going to have something weird to show”.

Then, she walked across the room, exclaiming: “Oh, look! A [sanitary] pad”. She also admitted that she’d “found a dirty tampon out by a hot tub” in a rental before.

“I have found another used pad by a toilet, and now I have found one behind the living room couch,” she explained.

She then moved into the kitchen, opening the oven to reveal an “almost whole cooked pie.” “Anybody hungry?” she joked.

In the fridge, there was also a birthday cake which was also barely touched.

“Somebody took a tiny little section of it,” she explained.

In the comments, someone asked: “Why do you not wear gloves?”

Another responded: “I think the better question is why people leave these things in [a holiday rental], which means it’s not their house.”

Meanwhile the original commenter replied: “Exactly. I agree on your comment, I would never. I’m the person that makes a bed before leaving, even though I know full well the bedding needs changing.”

One woman said that she’d “leave them a bad review” for leaving things lying around in the holiday rental.

Somebody fumed: “I don’t understand how people can’t just throw their nasty stuff away, especially when you have to give a name when checking in. Is that not embarrassing, like y’all know who stayed there and now know how nasty they can be?”

“How can you be that filthy?” a TikTok user questioned.

Why is it important to clean up after yourself in a holiday rental?

It is important to clean up in a holiday rental and not leave it dirty, as it shows respect for the property and consideration for the owners or hosts who have provided the space.

Leaving the rental clean helps maintain a good relationship with the host, ensures that you receive positive reviews as a guest, and makes it easier for the next guests to enjoy a pleasant and hygienic environment.

Additionally, cleaning up after yourself can help you avoid extra cleaning fees or penalties, and it demonstrates responsible and courteous behaviour when using a holiday rental.
