Shackleford, on the edge of the Guildford district and a 10-minute drive from Godalming, has been included in a UK top 48 list by The Telegraph, which is based on the range of house prices in villages across Britain

A charming village with a roast dinner tipped as one of the country’s best has been named a posh hotspot.

Shackleford in Surrey is a village nestled on the fringes of Guildford which is just a stone’s throw from Godalming, where romantic Christmas favourite The Holiday is set.

It was also recently named one of the UK’s poshest villages in rankings from the Telegraph. It’s not surprising considering the village boasts impressive schools, gorgeous houses and a wide array of pubs and restaurants.

The picturesque spot is surrounded by some breathtaking countryside, making it popular with hikers and ramblers – and of course the pubs make for a great stop along the way. In fact, one of its charming pubs is regularly praised by visitors for offering some of the best roast dinners, reports Surrey Live.

The highly-regarded Shackleford’s Cyder House Inn ranks second out of more than 40 pubs in Godalming on Tripadvisor, where it boasts a 4.5-star rating from almost 400 reviews and a 2023 Traveller’s Choice Award. One visitor praised the “excellent Sunday lunch”, calling it the “best pub roast”. Another said: “Great food and friendly staff. Dog-friendly too.” Others described it as “cosy” and praised “the best” vegan options.

Over the past year, the average price tag on a Shackleford home stood at nearly £632,000, with detached homes typically fetching around £835,000. Only one sale surpassed the £1 million mark, per Rightmove data, while terraced houses averaged at £225,000. In contrast, The Telegraph cites the average house price in the area as £1.36m.

According to Rightmove, which bases its figures on Land Registry data, overall sold prices in Shackleford saw an 80 per cent decrease over the last year compared to the year before, and a 70 per cent drop from the 2017 high of £2.13m. While Shackleford lacks its own train station, residents are only a 10-minute drive from Guildford and Farncombe Stations, offering direct routes into London.

If you are visiting Shackleford, then prepare for a relaxed day in a beautiful part of the world. It is not a village with a huge amount of tourist attractions beyond the pub or with that much hustle and bustle, but that is part of the charm. Life is slow paced and peaceful here, which is why those who live in the village love it so much.

For those who fancy a trip to a beautiful part of the UK but have already graced the pleasant streets of Shackleford, then Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula may be worth a go. It is just 200 metres long, but what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in stunning surroundings. Described by EnjoyTravel as “like a slice of Sardinia” due to its striking blue waters, the beach has been enchanting coastal enthusiasts for hundreds of years and recently was judged to be the best beach in the UK.
