I’ve searched the internet so shoppers don’t have to – but hurry, because some of these styles are selling fast

These are some of the best autumn jackets to shop now, as picked by a fashion writer

As a fashion writer who loves jackets, I come into my own when the high street releases its new season buys. This autumn the shops are awash with on-trend and classic coats, with everywhere from M&S to H&M and Arket to New Look getting in on the action.

From a cotton cargo that’s ideal for late summer to cosy countryside jackets that look perfect for autumnal walks, I’ve scoured the high street to pick the best of the bunch, with prices starting from less than £40.

From going for a cosy pub roast or putting together a smart work outfit, I’ve found options for every autumnal occasion. Scroll on to shop before these beauties inevitably sell out.

H&M Cotton Cargo Jacket – £39.99

H&M’s cargo jacket is ideal for early autumn thanks to the lightweight material

For anyone who missed out on the viral M&S jacket from a few months back, then H&M’s cotton cargo jacket gives a similar feel, and for less than £40. The jacket is ideal for spring thanks to its lightweight design and structured look that teams well with a T-shirt and jeans.

Available in sizes XXS-XL, the neutral jacket boasts a regular fit in a cotton weave material, plus front flap pockets. The turn-down collar and buttoned tabs give it a relaxed every day feel that will instantly add a cool touch to a simple everyday look.

One drawback for me is that the jacket doesn’t have an oversized fit as I think the style works better looking more roomy, so I’d size up to get the look.

M&S Pure Cotton Lightweight Buckle Country Jacket – £90

I tried on the M&S country jacket in store and loved the fit

M&S’ khaki jacket is already sold out in sizes 6 and 8, and when it’s this gorgeous it’s no wonder. This autumn, countryside chic is big news, and this buckle fastening jacket is a great take on the trend. Thanks to the earthy khaki hue it’ll be easy to team with all manner of colours.

Currently available on the M&S website in UK sizes 10-22, the jacket looks set to be the retailer’s next viral number.

For those who aren’t a fan of green, it also comes in a very chic black version that looks way more expensive than its price tag. One downside of the jacket is that it’s super casual so won’t be the most versatile addition to an autumn wardrobe.

Arket Oversized Denim Jacket – £125

Arket’s denim jacket is a great casual option that’s easy to style

Denim jackets can often be associated with the summer months, but this take on a classic style works well for autumn thanks to the on-trend barn style design and darker wash.

This oversized jacket teams well with everything from wide leg trousers to leggings and can also be worn with jeans in the same hue for a double denim look.

Thanks to the jacket’s slouchy relaxed fit, it teams best with casual looks, working well with trainers or boots. One downside for me is that occasionally darker denim can give off colour transfer, especially during the rainy season. The jacket is available in EU sizes 34-44 and is made from 100% cotton, making it a comfy everyday option.

New Look Dark Burgundy Borg Button Through Jacket – £39.99

Burgundy looks set to be big news once again this autumn

For a cosy weekend jacket that works well for everything from windy dog walks to cosy pub lunches, look no further than this borg jacket from New Look.

It’s perfect for teaming with activewear post workout or fashion fans can add jeans for a comfy yet stylish weekend look. Available in UK sizes 6-22, this £40 jacket also comes in two other autumnal colours including a chic chocolate brown and a classic beige.

One drawback is that I personally feel the contrast trim makes it look less premium, but for the price it’s a great high street find.

Mango Denim Parka with Corduroy Collar – £59.99

Mango has a great selection of chic jackets

Mango’s jackets are always super chic, and despite its casual design this denim parka is no exception. I tried this jacket on in store a few weeks ago and immediately loved it for teaming with high waisted trousers and maxi skirts.

My one drawback with Mango in general is that their sizing range isn’t generous, so I had to size up twice to get the slouchier fit I was looking for.

That being said, I think the more cropped fit of this jacket makes it look more put together than it might otherwise, so I think it’s a great everyday option for wearing with ballet flats and boots.

Bershka Leather Effect Jacket with pockets – £49.99

Bershka’s leather effect jacket comes in an autumnal burgundy hue

I also recently popped into Bershka and tried on their leather effect jacket with pockets. Again, my one drawback with the jacket is the sizing as it comes up small.

I personally think this is a great autumn staple and the burgundy gives a classic faux leather jacket a fun twist that feels very new season.

Available in sizes XS-L it features front pockets and a belted neck detail. Thanks to the relaxed vibe, the jacket can be worn undone for a more casual look or it’s easily elevated by doing it up. It’s also available in black.

ASOS Design Tailored Funnel Neck Jacket – £65

Funnel neck jackets are big news this season, and this beige jacket by ASOS Design is a great way to dip a toe into the trend. Thanks to the camel hue it’s still easy to style with everyday looks, but the high neckline gives it a more premium-looking finish.

The jacket is almost sold out in the stylish check colourway, so I don’t anticipate it’ll be hanging around for too long. It’s available in sizes XS-L and features a drawstring hem so shoppers can select their desired fit.

Whilst funnel neck jackets are currently favoured by fashion lovers, the super casual design of this option means it’s likely to be reserved for daytime plans only which perhaps won’t give it the maximum cost per wear for those who often have evening plans.

River Island Cream Harrington Jacket – £42

River Island’s Harrington jacket is a more elevated option perfect for wearing for evening plans

This bomber style jacket from River Island looks effortlessly chic and would team well with high waisted trousers for the office. It’s also a great option for wearing with evening outfits thanks to the chic cream colourway and more cropped length.

Available on the fashion retailer’s website in UK sizes 6-22, it can also be shopped in grey or beige shades. Personally I still wear white during winter, but one issue with this jacket could be that the lighter colourway may be high maintenance to care for.

M&S Cotton Rich Belted Longline Trench Coat – £79

M&S trench coat
A trench is an autumn staple for fashion fans

Jackets don’t come much more wearable for autumn than the classic trench coat. Shoppers can buy one now and wear it for years to come as the staple design never dates.

M&S’ offering features a comfy breathable cotton rich material and a flattering longline length. Personally, I prefer a more maxi fit to give a classic jacket a more modern feel.

My one drawback with a light beige trench is that they can be impractical once the rainy weather hits and the longer length means they’re prone to puddle splashes.

H&M Jacket – £44.99

H&M’s jacket is great for layering thanks to the lightweight material

H&M’s brown jacket perfectly blends a lightweight cover up with a blazer, giving a smart yet on-trend look. The material is reminiscent of a faux suede, making it perfect for the season ahead.

Team with suede loafers and a brown tote to keep the look tonal or opt for cream trousers and accessories to soften the look.

My one drawback with this having tried it on in store (in the chocolate brown shade) is that the material feels a little flimsy, however this would make it ideal for anyone who likes to layer without getting too hot.

Next Chocolate Brown Quilted Jacket – £65

Next’s quilted jacket is perfect for lazy weekends

Quilted jackets are still very much here to stay, and the chocolate brown hue on this Next one gives it an autumn update. Perfect for casual outfits including layering over sweatshirts and joggers, this jacket is lightweight with a stylish tall collar.

Personally, I think it would be handy if this style of coat had a hood (which this one doesn’t) but the slouchy side pockets and quilted padding make it perfect for off duty looks.
