London trusts feature prominently across the new NHS performance tables

Here is a full list of the new league tables for NHS trusts in England. The list is divided into three sections: acute trusts; non-acute trusts; and ambulance trusts.

In the NHS, acute trusts run hospitals that provide short-term, urgent, and specialist medical care, such as A&E, surgery, and inpatient treatment. Non-acute trusts don’t usually run general hospitals – instead, they provide other types of care, like community health services, mental health, learning disability support, or ambulance services.

Each section is subdivided into four performance categories, with category one containing the best performing trusts and category four containing those with the poorest performance.

In London, among acute trusts, Moorfields Eye Hospital ranks first nationally. Interim chief executive Peter Ridley said: “We are delighted to be recognised in this first table. Many of these are areas we have focussed on, and will continue to do so. Many thanks to all our staff at Moorfields; this performance reflects their dedication and commitment.”

Elsewhere, other high performers include UCLH, Imperial College Healthcare, and Guy’s & St Thomas’, all in the top category. Lower down, Barts Health, King’s College Hospital, Lewisham & Greenwich, and Royal Free London are placed towards the bottom of the rankings. Meanwhile, the London Ambulance Service is ranked in category three, below most of its regional counterparts.

Trusts are ranked within their category based on a “score” that has been determined by averaging their performance against a range of targets, such as reducing waiting times for treatment and for being seen in A&E departments, or improving ambulance response times. The lower the score, the better the performance.

The scores are not an absolute unit of measurement, such as marks out of a total or a percentage; rather they are intended to reflect how an organisation performs relatively to other trusts in the same category and to help determine their ranking.

The data has been published by the Department for Health & Social Care. For each trust, their overall ranking is given first, followed by their name, then the type of trust in brackets (such as specialist or teaching), followed by their score.
