Lidl has confirmed how shoppers can bag the deal
For those looking to save money on their weekly food shop, Lidl’s fruit and vegetable scheme is a great way to pack your cart with groceries for less than a cup of coffee. The supermarket is offering 5kg boxes of fruit and veg for just £1.50 in every one of their Great Britain stores.
The boxes contain items from the store shelves which may have become slightly damaged or discoloured but are still good to eat. The aim is to reduce food waste, and the boxes are available from store opening until midday.
When the boxes were first rolled out, the CEO of Lidl GB at the time, Christian Härtnagel, said: “The really brilliant thing about this initiative is that, not only is it helping to tackle the highly important challenge of food waste, it’s also helping our customers make even more savings.”
The boxes are put together each day by the dedicated in-store Freshness Specialists and any boxes leftover after midday are given to local causes through the supermarket’s food distribution programme called Feed It Back.
Other supermarkets offer similar deals, including Sainsbury’s which sells a “Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me” box filled with surplus fruit and vegetables for £2. The boxes contain fresh groceries that would have otherwise gone to waste, and they are only available in larger stores, and while stock lasts.
Customers can find the boxes in Sainsbury’s fresh produce aisles, and the supermarket says that “all products included are carefully selected to ensure they are still fresh”. The initiative is part of Sainsbury’s commitment to halve food waste across its value chain by 2030.
Waitrose offers a Wonderfully Wonky range to help cut down on food waste and avoid fruit and vegetables from being thrown out because of their appearance. The supermarket assures customers that although the items “may look unusual” they are all grown to Waitrose’s “usual high standards and always tastes good”.
During the month of September, Lidl is also offering deals on wines as part of its “September Wine Tour”. The supermarket explains: “From rich, full-bodied Italian reds to refreshing, zesty Spanish whites, there’s plenty to hunker down and get cosy with this autumn, all at prices to fall for.”
Items on offer include a bottle of Primitivo Salento for £7.49, Almocreve Alentejano for £6.99, and Medici Riccardi Chianti Classico Riserva for £9.99. Also available is Traminer Aromatico for £7.99, Piemonte Bianco for £7.49, and Mar y Luna Garnacha Tintorera for £6.99.
