If you’re on a mission to achieve Rapunzel-esque locks – and quickly – one woman insists her nan holds the key. With countless products flooding the market, it can feel overwhelming trying to figure out where to begin and whether they actually deliver results.

But TikTok user called Melody Aslan (@melodyyaslan) is convinced by her grandmother’s hair growth solution – and it features a surprising component. “If your grandma never taught you how to achieve rapid hair growth, let me tell you my Slavic grandma’s secret”, Melody declared with excitement. She then displayed a photograph of her great-grandmother’s tresses at 60-years-old, which cascaded past her waist.

“And my 80-year-old grandma has hair like this now”, she continued.

“This plant blocks the enzyme that causes hair loss, it detoxes your scalp, and strengthens hair follicles.”

But what is it?

According to Melody, it’s stinging nettle.

One individual insisted that “nettle shampoo grew my hair from bob to long in a year”, while Melody revealed some discoveries she made after using the shampoo for “five months”.

She explained that because of the shampoo’s potency, she doesn’t require conditioner as her hair looks “way more voluminous and better” without it.

“But to make sure my hair isn’t dry, I oil my hair with argan oil”, she continued, explaining she applies it “before showering”, allows it to “sit for one hour”, and then cleanses only her scalp with nettle shampoo.

“It’s better to use a natural shampoo because modern shampoos have silicones that temporarily make your hair look better, but natural shampoos actually make your hair stronger by itself”, she advised.

Melody also noted for those aiming to “want to maximise results”, they should “drink nettle tea daily”, mentioning her “grandma used to wash her hair with nettle tea”.

She pointed out it “also helps with period cramps”.

In response, another member suggested: “Nettle shampoo + ACV (apple cider vinegar diluted with water) instead of conditioner, before washing your hair rosemary oil on scalp (massage).”

Digital health platform Clinikally reports that nettles, rich in “high concentration of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive substances, are thought to provide potential benefits for hair health.”

They are believed to boost growth as “nettle root extract contains compounds that are thought to inhibit the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to male and female hair loss”.

Furthermore, it can promote scalp health, control dandruff and deliver nutrients.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness differs between individuals, but it’s an option worth exploring.
