Photographs from the scene of a shooting in a north London park show forensics searching for evidence after a man reportedly shot a woman before turning then gun on himself. Police have said that the suspect, a man in 40s, died at hospital after being found with a gunshot wound after police were called to the park at around 7pm.
A woman, also in her 40s, was rushed to hospital from the scene after being shot in the torso. She has since been discharged and she is being supported by specialist officers.
A firearm involved in the incident was safely recovered and a crime scene remains in place at Clissold Park. A cordon has been in place at the scene since last night as police carry out their investigations.
Photographs show a forensic tent in place, as well as evidence markers. Clissold Park remains closed to the public, say Hackney Council.
Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Ireland, who is leading the investigation from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “We recognise the shock and distress this incident will have caused anyone present in Clissold Park yesterday evening, as well as the local community in and around Stoke Newington.
“Our thoughts remain with the victim and their family, and we continue to support them as this investigation progresses.
“The investigation is in its very early stages and we are working at pace to establish the full circumstances. We are now able to share that the man and woman involved were known to each other. We are treating this as an isolated incident and there is no wider risk to the public.
“We know there were several witnesses on the scene yesterday who are yet to come forward with information. We urge anyone who was at the scene and may be able to help us to reach out.
“If you have anything to share with us that could assist our investigation, please call 101 quoting reference CAD 6102/17SEP.”
