Man killed in ‘fight’ on busy London high street pictured for first time

A 43-year-old man who died after being ‘attacked’ in Southwark has been pictured for the first time.

Michael John Edwards, of Nuneaton, was seriously injured during an alleged fight on Borough High Street in the early hours of September 13.

He died in hospital four days later, the Metropolitan Police has since confirmed. The force is now moving forward with a murder investigation.

Lewis Macleod, of Hadleigh Road in Sunderland, was charged with one count of causing grievous bodily harm and one count of actual bodily harm on Monday, September 15.

He appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court and has been remanded into custody.

The Crown Prosecution Service will review the charges following the death of Mr Edwards.

Detective Inspector Andy Griffin, who is leading the investigation, said: “My team are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to Michael’s tragic death.

“Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this very difficult time. They continue to be supported by specialist officers.”

Cllr Natasha Ennin, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Neighbourhoods, said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Michael Edwards and my thoughts are with his family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

“This was a tragic incident and we’re working to help the police in their investigation, and ensure support for anyone affected.”
