Stephen Mangan opened up to MyLondon about his love for Primrose Hill and why running in the rain is ‘magnificent’

Stephen Mangan has been a familiar face on British television for more than two decades, starring in hit shows such as Green Wing, Episodes and The Split . The 56-year-old actor, who is also a presenter and writer, is widely admired for his versatility on screen.

Away from his career, Stephen is known for his love of theatre and long-standing ties to London, the city where he grew up and still lives today. Speaking at BGC’s annual Charity Day, he gave MyLondon an insight into the local spots and routines that make the capital feel like home.

The BBC star described how much he enjoys the community feel of Primrose Hill, where he lives. He said: “I have a lovely local café, Sam’s Café. Very simple menu, they do really well and I enjoy them a lot.”

Sam’s Café is a cosy restaurant designed to feel like a home-from-home. Just a short walk from Primrose Hill Park, it serves everything from all-day breakfasts to cakes, pastries and sandwiches to go, with vegetarian and vegan-friendly options, and even has a vintage jukebox for atmosphere.

When it comes to Sunday roasts, the actor didn’t hesitate to recommend another neighbourhood favourite. Stephen said: “The Lansdowne, again in Primrose Hill, is a great restaurant that does a fantastic Sunday roast.”

A staple of Primrose Hill since 1992, The Lansdowne pub is famed for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and high-quality gastro pub fare. The chefs use ingredients from award-winning suppliers to create a dining experience that has made the pub a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

Stephen is also an avid runner and finds London’s canals the perfect place to escape from city life. He added: “It’s not really the city, it’s not the countryside – it’s its own kind of space and you can run for miles.”

Just the day before, he clocked a two-and-a-half-hour run from North London to Limehouse and back again in heavy rain. He said: “It was magnificent. It’s great running in the rain, just give into it.”

The actor was one of many famous faces at BGC’s annual Charity Day on September 11. The event, which marks its 20th year, raises millions for good causes in memory of colleagues lost in the 9/11 attacks.

Stephen said: “I’m here with the HvH Arts charity, which helps marginalised children get access to the arts. It’s a cause close to my heart.”

Reflecting on the day, Mangan praised the mix of finance professionals, celebrities and young people brought together by the event. He said: “The children are all out there tucking into the free ice cream. I worry for the ice cream truck because I’m not sure it’ll survive the next eight hours – but it’s just great. Some of the money raised here today is going to help those kids, and it’s a great partnership.”
