Yesterday (September 23) saw Mr Trump renew his attacks on Mr Khan and London at the UN

The Mayor of London’s office has taken another dig at Donald Trump after the latter’s latest rant against the state of London.

At a speech to the United Nations General Assembly yesterday (Tuesday, September 23), Mr Trump railed against immigration and clean energy ideas in Europe, even claiming London ‘wants to go to sharia law’. This follows a renewing of the war of words between Mr Trump and Mr Khan, which has been going for several years.

Now Mr Khan’s office has pointed out that London is actually a good deal safer than many American cities and that a record number of Americans are choosing to make London their home. “We are not going to dignify his appalling and bigoted comments with a response,” a spokesperson said.

ā€œLondon is the greatest city in the world, safer than major US cities, and we’re delighted to welcome the record number of US citizens moving here.ā€

In his speech yesterday, Mr Trump said: ā€œEurope is in serious trouble. They have been invaded by a force of illegal aliens like nobody’s ever seen before. I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed.

ā€œNow they want to go to sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that. Both the immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe if something isn’t done immediately. This cannot be sustained.ā€

Mr Trump is no stranger to beef with the Mayor of London. After his recent state visit, during which he stayed with King Charles at Windsor Castle and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Chequers, described Sir Sadiq as ā€œamong the worst mayors in the world.ā€

Sir Sadiq said he ā€œindifferentā€ towards the US President and has ā€œmore important things to worry about.ā€

Asked to respond to Mr Trump’s claim, Sir Sadiq said on Sunday (September 21): ā€œI’ve not really given it much thought. I am indifferent to President Trump. I literally (have) more important things to worry about.ā€

ā€œI think the Mayor of London, Khan, is among the worst mayors in the world,” Mr Trump said, “and we have some bad ones. If you look at Chicago, but I think he’s the equivalent of the mayor of Chicago. I think he’s done a terrible job. Crime in London is through the roof. The Mayor of London, Khan, Mayor Khan has done a terrible job.”
