The Metropolitan Police is now investigating his death as murder

An 85-year-old man who died days after he was allegedly assaulted by another patient at Charing Cross Hospital has now been named and pictured by police for the first time. Andrew Farmer was found seriously injured on Thursday, September 18 and passed away a week later.

A murder investigation is now underway, with a 70-year-old man arrested in connection at the Hammersmith hospital. Anatoliy Podmazko, of no fixed address, was charged with grievous bodily harm on Saturday, September 20 but could now face an upgraded charge.

He is due to appear at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, October 17. The Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service are reviewing the case amid ongoing enquiries.

Mr Farmer, who lived in Ealing, has been described as ‘deeply intelligent and witty’ by his partner of six decades. Devastated Paul Wrigley said: “My partner through thick and thin for 60 years. Now sadly missed.

“An Oxford First – whatever he touched, he touched deeply – opera, Devon topography, the underprivileged. Scholarly but with a wry sense of humour. Rest now, my dear friend.”

He and Mr Farmer’s family are now being supported by specialist officers.

Detective Inspector Kirsten Hadleigh, who is leading the investigation added: “Our thoughts remain with Andrew’s family and friends at this undoubtedly difficult time. We remain in close contact with Andrew’s loved ones and are keeping them up to date with the progress of our investigation.”
