A woman was left so confused when her neighbour knocked on her door and made an outrageous demand that she laughed in the other person’s face – but she was deadly serious

It’s not uncommon for neighbours to ask one another for favours. Maybe you need to borrow a tool for a quick DIY project, or perhaps your neighbour has asked you to make sure their bin gets collected while they’re on holiday. Small favours like these are usually no big deal, and it’s all part of being a good neighbour.

But sometimes, the requests your neighbours make can be outrageous. You might have had someone ask you to stop making noise in your garden during a one-off summer barbecue, or had residents tell you they’re sick of you parking on the free-for-all roadside parking outside your house.

One woman was particularly gobsmacked by her neighbour’s recent demand, and her first reaction was to laugh in the other person’s face because she genuinely thought she was joking.

In a post on Reddit, the woman said her neighbour from across the street pounded on her front door in the middle of the day and had a “super serious look” on her face. Judging by how angry the neighbour looked, the woman believed something was genuinely wrong, but what she said left her in stitches.

The neighbour demanded: “Can you do something about the glare from your windows? It’s shining into my kitchen.”

The woman said she “stood there trying to process that for a solid five seconds” before bursting into laughter, as she told her neighbour: “I’ll see if NASA takes custom requests.”

However, the neighbour didn’t see the funny side of her comment and told her the sun was “really inconvenient” before walking away. The woman was left baffled, as the neighbour seemed genuinely frustrated she didn’t have the “power to dim the sun” and stop it from bouncing off her windows.

Commenters on the post were left equally confused. Many praised the woman for making the NASA joke, while others told her she should go one step further and leave a catalogue for curtains on the neighbour’s doorstep.

One person said: “Leave a curtain catalogue on her steps. Good NASA joke, though.”

Another added: “When she discovers curtains, it’ll blow her mind.”

A third posted: “In a few weeks, it won’t be a problem because of the sun shifting its path in the sky as autumn progresses. Let her know you ‘took care of the problem’.”

Other commenters understood where the neighbour was coming from, though. Some pointed out the sun reflecting off your windows can cause problems for other houses, as it can melt the vinyl siding on some homes.

One stated: “The complaint is funny, but I can relate. The sun would reflect off my neighbour’s windows and focus into a death ray that slowly melted my vinyl siding in two spots. Eventually, I attached some metal artwork to the outside wall in those spots to take the brunt of the damage.”

Another wrote: “There are situations where the sun reflecting off your windows can be a problem if the windows are warped and focus the light in a way that melts or sets things on fire.”
