Tucked away in the hills of Yorkshire, there is a charming village full of autumn colour, quirky shops, and literary heritage that is perfect for a cosy seasonal day out
The UK boasts a number of pretty villages but some are more well known than others. There is one in Yorkshire that sits on top of a hill and has a rich literary history.
Haworth in West Yorkshire, near Bradford, is recognised for its connection to the Brontë sisters, who lived and wrote many of their famous works there. The Brontë Parsonage Museum is now a popular visitor attraction for literature-lovers and students on school trips. The village, located on the edge of the Pennine moors, also features a number of independent stores, some of which have some quirky items.
Lou Anne, a mum from the north west, recommends visiting Haworth for an autumn day out after recently spending the day there herself.
She documented her trip on TikTok where she said: “If there’s one day trip in the UK that should be on your autumn bucket list then it’s definitely Haworth.”
The content creator started her day with a cup of coffee from Cafe Verde before venturing into The Cabinet of Curiosities, a gift shop with unique handmade items.
Lou Anne called it a “must-visit” that is “home to the weird and wonderful”. She admired the “absolutely gorgeous” book section and picked up a book full of Halloween stories.
The Cabinet of Curiosities is a family business and after buying the shop nearly 30 years ago, the owners restored it to its former glory as a Victorian druggists and apothecary shop.
The cabinets and units have been salvaged from chemists, grocery shops and museums, proving the perfect setting for the store’s handmade candles, soaps and bath powders and new range of gifts.
Lou Anne praised the amount of “incredible” independent shops in Haworth, including And Chocolate of Haworth, Sonia’s Smile and Dynasty.
She came across one that stood out to her, The Peculiar Shop, with the “creepiest dolls” that could be seen through the shop window.
The mum added: “Right at the bottom there’s a little park. This was great for my little one. It had a play frame.”
After stopping for some lunch, Lou Anne had a look at the gift shop at The Brontë Parsonage Museum before ending the day with a drink at Haworth Steam Brewing Co.
Throughout the TikTok video, the cobbled Main Street can be seen as well as autumn decorations outside of shops, like carved pumpkins.
Lou Anne hailed Haworth as the “perfect place to visit” for those who love books and autumn.
Her TikTok video has garnered thousands of views and likes and dozens of comments. One user said: “Grew up visiting family in Yorkshire and always loved going to Haworth.”
Another added: “Love Howarth especially at Christmas time.” A third commented: “I’m looking for somewhere to go next weekend and this looks just the place.”
Someone familiar with the West Yorkshire village chimed in: “Fantastic place for a great day out or weekend away. Also the Worth Valley Railway is a must visit.”
