A cleaning enthusiast shared the stains that have appeared on their toilet seat and they shared their frustration about the many products they have tried that have failed to remove them
Stains can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare, particularly when they appear on toilet seats. To clean them effectively, it’s important to identify the cause first.
Urine is one of the main culprits for staining. It reacts with water, causing a breakdown of any bacteria or fungi on the surface of the toilet seat, as well as the lid and bowl.
Hard water stains are another common issue, often appearing as limescale due to accumulated calcium and minerals leaving stubborn marks on the toilet seat and bowl.
While bleach’s disinfecting power is unquestionable, its chemical reaction with plastic toilet seats, especially in concentrated form, can result in an ugly yellow discolouration. After numerous unsuccessful attempts with various cleaning products, a frustrated cleaning enthusiast sought advice from the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook community.
In a search for solutions, they anonymously posted a photo of their discoloured toilet seat with a plea: “Help! My toilet seat is stained and I have tried so much to get it off but nothing has worked.”, reports the Daily Record.
They explained their cleaning efforts: “I’ve tried using a scourer with pink stuff, baking soda and vinegar, lemon, Viakal and bleach – you name it.”
Expressing feelings of defeat, they complained: “Nothing works and I feel so dirty. Has anyone got any advice, or am I going to need a new toilet seat?”.
The post triggered dozens of recommendations from over 100 group members, but the standout remedy was using a magic eraser.
Magic erasers are praised as the ultimate fix for those stubbornly difficult marks that many give up on.
A two-pack of Flash erasers at Ocado costs just £3, so just £1.50 each.
Sarah Ridge praised its effectiveness, saying: “A magic eraser works wonders! Only thing I’ve found that removes these stains.”
Lauren Watson was equally chuffed with her find: “The Flash magic sponge is incredible. I thought the stains on my toilet seat were going to be impossible to remove before I tried this.”
Another delighted user declared: “A magic eraser sponge works wonders on everything, even removes stains on walls without any damage.”
Washing machines will be sparkling clean and odour-free with 1 natural kitchen item
Burnt-on food will ‘melt off’ oven trays if you use just 1 item – no scrubbing
Ruth Angus shared her lucky experience: “Try a magic sponge, I used one as a last resort and it worked perfectly. The stains just disappeared and it only took a minute of rubbing it. No scrubbing here.”
Meanwhile, Katie Thomas was thrilled about her fresh discovery: “Magic eraser! I have just recently discovered how magical these things really are and man are they life-changing.”
