Poundland confirmed the news earlier today

Poundland has announced today that all its stores will remain shut over three specific days as a token of appreciation for the tireless efforts of its staff over the past year. Stores will close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day – a decision likely to be a welcome relief for employees after a challenging year for the company.

Working in retail during the hectic Christmas period can be both enjoyable and demanding, so the confirmation that Poundland shops will stay closed on December 26 and January 1 will provide a much-needed respite for staff, allowing them to unwind and celebrate the holiday season with their loved ones.

This move comes as other retailers, such as Marks & Spencer, have declared that their staff will have to work on Boxing Day for the first time in half a decade. In a bid to spread some Christmas cheer, Poundland is also gifting each employee a £25 voucher booklet in November to spend in-store throughout December and January 2026, helping their hard-earned money stretch further this festive season.

Darren MacDonald, Country Manager UK at Poundland, said: “It’s no secret that 2025 has been one of our most challenging years, but the support and commitment from our colleagues has been nothing short of amazing – and I’m delighted we can renew our commitment to give them the time they deserve over the holidays.”

“I know how much our colleagues are looking forward to making shopping in stores a magical experience this year- and we’re proud to support them with a proper festive break.”
