A mum-of-two was left amazed by the unexpected harvest in her garden after her son accidentally spilled dried popcorn kernels in her dahlia bed, and other people were left gobsmacked too

A mum and her kids were left amazed at the results of an unexpected garden harvest, after her four-year-old son accidentally spilled popcorn in a garden bed.

Mum-of-two Andrea from Parker, Colorado in the US is an amateur gardener who spends her free time in her garden, where she grows speciality flowers and pumpkins. While her garden is well-planned out, something unexpected happened a few months ago, which left the family amazed by an unexpected thing growing in their garden among her dahlias. While Andrea has grown a following of over 13,000 people online from showing off the various pumpkins and flowers growing in her garden, the viewers were soon left amazed by the ‘happy accident’ that had occurred.

“My four-year-old spilled a bottle of [unpopped] popcorn, just like this, in my raise bed, and this is what happened,” Andrea revealed in her video as she showed off the tall maize plants behind her.

“It grew corn,” she announced.

The mum went on to say that her and her children were planning on picking some of the cobs that day to heat up in the microwave to see if they had truly managed to grow their own popcorn. Her son and daughter are then seen picking a cob each from the tall plant before carefully unwrapping them to reveal the bright-coloured corn inside.

But this wasn’t enough to prove their success, as they then headed into the kitchen for the next step.

“So we Googled it, and it said to put the popcorn in a paper bag,” she explained. “And then it said to fold the paper bag over two times, and to microwave it for a minute and a half.”

Her kids, sitting on the counter, excitedly opened the microwave for her as the popcorn bag was placed inside. As it was then turned on, the kids were sat with the faces glued to the window in the door as they anxiously awaited the microwave to heat up the popcorn bag, and hopefully pop some popcorn.

However, the cob of ‘popcorn’ never popped, with Andrea asserting that the corn was cooked but not popped. So, they decided to put it back into the microwave, and soon, the popping started.

“You guys!” Andrea exclaimed, while her son asserted that it ‘smells like popcorn’.

“Moment of truth,” the mum said as she carefully opened up the paper bag to reveal that some of the corn actually did pop into popcorn – but they didn’t look like what we’d expect popcorn to look like.

Instead, the popped corn still looked yellow like corn, but there was no doubt that they had popped. Andera went on to say that she believed the corn had been too wet at the start, which is why they didn’t pop up white and fluffy like ‘normal’ popcorn.

She went on to tell her viewers that she’d done more research, and that it was advised to leave the corn to dry before popping it. While it didn’t work when they tried again after five hours, as one person had advised, she said that she would be leaving the corn to dry for a few weeks, but went on to ask for more advice from her viewers.

However, most people took to the comment section to share their amazement at what they had seen, with one person saying: “Well, I was today years old when I learned popcorn is not just regular corn.”

“What a great lesson for the kiddos. How fun,” a second person said, while a third user wrote: “The perfect happy little accident!!”

As for advice, another viewer shared: “Hello- person from Nebraska here— you need to wait until your corn stalk and leaves are completely dry and brown before you harvest your ears. It should be treated like field/ grain corn not sweet corn.”
