Our pets always keep us on our toes and one dog’s intense reaction to what he thought was a real cat left people laughing after his owner revealed the truth in a hilarious clip

Anyone who has a pet could spend hours just watching them run around and play. Often our pets make us laugh with their silly behaviours or sweet nature – and one dog owner left people laughing after realising his dog’s intense reaction to what he thought was a cat recently, but his owner revealed the truth.

Morgan shared a video on her TikTok page recently – @belmelly – which showed a dog sat in the backseat of a vehicle, agitated and barking nonstop. The border heeler appeared scared and communicating a cat was staring at her from the car parked next to them. However, when the owner glanced over to see what triggered the intense barking, she found the so-called cat in question was only a car decoration.

The photograph, stuck in the back seat window, showed a mortified cat with its head tilted back, eyes bulging and mouth open. You can see why the dog was frightened!

Trying to comfort her worried pet, the dog owner repeatedly shouted: “It’s not real.” But the canine kept going.

“I swear dogs can be so stupid,” added another. Someone else insisted: “I want you to show this to the car owner, they’re going to love it.”

One shared another funny story about their pup, writing: “My dog had an absolute fit at a cut out of Flavor Flav in the Raising Canes drive thru once.”

Why do dogs bark at other animals?

To help owners understand why barking may increase – and what you can do to ease things for your dog – Rachel Garbutt, Registered Veterinary Nurse at Butternut Box, has shared some advice.

The expert, who studied at The Royal Veterinary College and spent seven years working in practice, said: “Barking is completely normal communication. But in late summer, with neighbourhoods busier and family routines changing, it can quickly tip into excess. The aim isn’t to stop dogs from barking, but to ease the triggers that make life stressful for both pets and people.”

Speaking about why dogs bark at other animals, she said: “In busy neighbourhoods, one bark can easily lead to another – what we call cascade barking. With open windows and lighter evenings, dogs hear each other more clearly.

“Closing windows during peak times or playing gentle background music helps reduce the impact, and specially designed canine playlists can be surprisingly effective. It’s about lowering the overall stimulation so your dog doesn’t feel the need to join in every barking chorus.”
