This popular fruit is notorious for going bad quickly, but you can prolong its lifespan with one very simple storage trick.
Avocados are a favourite brunch option for so many people, and they’re packed with healthy fats too. However, the one drawback – apart from their price – is how quickly they can go bad if you’re not careful.
Because of their dark exterior, it’s hard to tell if it’s going to be nice and ripe on the inside before you cut into it. More often than not, slicing it open reveals a brown and mushy interior that isn’t appetising for anyone.
Usually the window of peak ripeness is only a couple of days. However, if you’ve got an avocado in the fridge and you want to make it last, there’s one trick that you should know about.
The hack was shared on YouTube by Amy Cross at The Cross legacy, an expert in reducing food waste. She says you can prolong the lifespan of your avocados by giving them a quick wash when you get home from the supermarket – but not just with water.
According to the pro, you can use white vinegar to really get the most out of your avocados and stop them from going brown too quickly.
This hack is so simple to follow, and it comes in really handy for anyone wanting to cut down on the amount of food they waste.
First, fill up a large bowl with water, and add a quarter cup of distilled white vinegar. Add your avocados, and let them soak for a total of two minutes.
This should be enough time to give them a cleanse, without having the vinegar actually soaking into the avocado skin. Then, lay them out on a towel, making sure they are completely dry before you put them in the fridge.
And when you do store them away, try keeping them in the crisper drawer next to a lemon.
Amy said: “Lemons and avocados are produce buddies, and they actually keep each other fresh longer.”
This trick is said to keep avocados fresh for ‘a month or longer’ – so worth a shot if you’re sick and tired of throwing away rottign avocados.
