But not every city will leave you feeling like you’ve spent a month’s wages
London has some of the priciest cabs on planet earth, the latest figures show. According to Condé Nast Traveller we come fifth in the rankings, with the most expensive taxis on earth found in Zurich, Switzerland, which charges £20.40 for a 5km journey.
Second place went to Paris which charges £19.80 for the same distance, and Luxembourg where the journey will see you back £19.43. Meanwhile a 5km cab in Geneva costs £18.76 which falls to £17.26 here in the capital.
However not every city will leave you feeling like you’ve spent a month’s wages, with Asian cities demanding comically cheap fares. A 5km ride in Delhi costs £1.49, Mumbai costs £1.57, and Bengaluru £2.17.
And in Manilla in the Philippines it costs £1.72 and Jakarta in Indonesia £1.79. Interestingly, cities such as New York and Toronto ranked somewhere in the middle.
A 5km trip in Toronto costs £8.22 which rises to £8.29 in Vancouver. While New York came 20th where the journey costs £11.81.
It comes after Uber began accepting cash for fares across most of the UK, but not in London, following pilot schemes in Birmingham, Stoke, Nottingham, and Leicester. To do so riders can choose the ‘cash’ option of their payment. Passengers can select cash as their payment option, but drivers can choose to not accept cash on their own apps.
If a driver doesn’t have the right change it will be given to the passenger as credit on the app, which can be used to cheapen future rides.
Speaking to the BBC, an Uber spokesperson said: “We believe that movement should be accessible to everyone, so following successful pilots in some UK cities over the last 18 months, we have decided to give passengers outside of London the option to pay for trips with cash.”
