The ‘must-watch’ British TV series has a 96 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an average of 4.8 on Google

With the clocks going back this weekend, we get an extra hour of sleep but it also signals the start of evenings drastically drawing in earlier. For many of us this will spark the desire to get cosy on the sofa and find a new TV boxset or show to binge watch.

While it is easy to get lost in scrolling through all the possibilities of series to watch on streamers there is a Apple TV+ comedy drama with near perfect reviews and ratings, 96 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and 4.8 on Google, that has passed a lot of us by and which can be watched without needing an Apple subscription for the first time. The first season of the hit comedy drama Trying is now available on BBC iPlayer.

Trying, hailed as a “hidden gem” by fans, stars Esther Smith (known for BBC’s Cuckoo) and Rafe Spall (best known for Hot Fuzz and The Big Short) as couple, Nikki and Jason, as they embark on their journey to parenthood after struggling to conceive and life as adoptive parents. The series first premiered in May 2020 and was renewed for a fifth season earlier this year, so you have plenty to catch up on.

One reviewer on Google has heralded the show to be “equally as good” as another Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso. Leaving a 5 star review, Genie Bettencourt wrote: “Trying, an Apple TV property, is equally as good as its other standout – Ted Lasso. Trying is incredibly heartfelt and earnest, with a wonderful cast of characters and a moving plotline about a young couple trying to become parents.”

They added: “I wish that Trying got the same visibility and love as Ted Lasso, but with its low profile it remains a hidden, magical gem for those who find it in their queue.”

The most recent 5 star review by Nat Jackson praises the “excellent series” which they said many missed due to it being “hidden away” in the BBC schedule. Nat wrote: “The BBC has just shown this hidden away in an after 10pm Monday night slot – more fool them. It deserved better. If you missed this excellent series you can stream on iPlayer.”

A third viewer described the show as “funny” and “poignant” and praised the cast as “superb”, adding: “One of my favourite shows from the last few years. A lovely respite from the doom and gloom,” while another recommended the series to others on X, writing: “It’s funny, sad and brilliantly written…fully recommend it.”

The show also stars familiar faces to British TV fans, Darren Boyd (known for The Outlaws) as Scott, Sian Brooke (Blue Lights) as Karen and Oliver Chris (Rivals) as Freddy. The reason why the first season of Trying was recently shown on BBC One and can now be watched on iPlayer is because It is a co-production between. BBC Studios and Apple TV+.

The first season of Trying, made up of eight episodes, is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer. All seasons – one to four – are available on Apple TV+. The release date for season 5 is yet to be announced.

In the UK, a monthly Apple TV+ subscription costs £9.99, with an annual option available for £89. A new subscriber gets a free seven-day trial, and if you buy a new Apple device, you may get a longer free period, such as three month
