Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara has been a viral sensation since it launched in 2021, and now the brand has expanded its shade range to include eight new colours

An ex-Boots makeup artist has heaped praise on a £13 mascara – impressing her in ‘one stroke’. Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara’s gravity-defying length, dramatic volume and lightweight feel have left our experts, including former Boots makeup artist and Liverpool Echo writer Nina Crighton, and her colleague Emily Sleight, ‘impressed’.

The brand has built on its renowned mascara’s reputation by introducing new colours over the years to enhance the eyes, which have been well-received. While trying out coloured mascara might seem intimidating, last year saw burgundy, pink and blue mascaras become the talk of the town.

These shades gave users’ eyes a vibrancy that accentuated their natural iris colour. For instance, those with brown eyes were fond of the blue, while burgundy brightened hazel eyes, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Now, Maybelline has added more colours to the range – bringing the total to eight. The latest additions include True Brown, Green Altitude, Space Diamond and Plum Twilight, which were launched a few months ago.

According to Maybelline’s colour wheel, these hues are ideal for those with brown, hazel and blue eyes as they make their tones stand out. Speaking about True Brown, the brand explained how this softer brown mascara is excellent for hazel eyes, stating: “A brown mascara like Brownish Black can perform [to bring out] your eyes’ darker tones.”

Maybelline has introduced new colours to its viral mascara

On Green Altitude, £12.99, the brand says: “With a mix of green and brown, hazel eyes are great for experimenting with colour. Green Altitude is a standout choice. Not only does the green colour help darken and lengthen lashes, but it can work to bring out the natural green already within your eyes.”

Meanwhile, Space Diamond can make brown eyes appear ‘super dynamic’, with the brand explaining: “Glitter mascara like Space Diamond is where it’s at. The sparkles add an extra layer of depth, making brown eyes look super dynamic.”

Plum Twilight works perfectly for blue eyes as its rich, cool blue undertones belong to the same colour palette and help these eyes stand out. Beyond these fresh shades, the ophthalmologist-tested mascara is loved for its effortless application thanks to its unique Flex Tower brush, which flexes to add volume and coat each individual lash from base to tip.

Regarding its formula, it features bamboo extract and fibres for ‘long, full lashes that never get weighed down’. Discussing her experience with the mascara (original black colour), writer Emily Sleight said: “This mascara is definitely viral for a reason, but I will say, beware of clump!

“The mascara brush itself looked thin and precise, making it a good product to grip your lashes and extend. With bamboo extract and fibres infused in the washable mascara formula, it aims to create longer, fuller-looking lashes that ‘never get weighed down.’ I was pretty impressed with this mascara, but it was very thick.”

Emily added: “Just one stroke from the root to the tip of my eyelash and the volume was incredible. If you’re a fan of putting on a few layers of mascara, beware of clumping. Of course, this is natural, but I feel like this may put some people off the product itself.”

As for the burgundy shade, writer Eve Rowlands – who has hazel eyes – said: “The original Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High mascara has been my go-to since its launch in 2021 after being heavily influenced to buy it after seeing incredible real-life results on the likes of TikTok (it’s a powerful tool). My lashes aren’t naturally long or curly, and they are annoyingly stubborn; finding a mascara that gives them height, drama and curl has always been a challenge.”

Eve continued, commenting on comparisons to Huda Beauty’s One Coat Wow and Iconic London’s Triple Threat: “But Maybelline’s Sky High always does the trick – without making them look or feel caked in product and leaves them long, feathered out and my eyes looking bright (seconded only by Huda Beauty’s One Coat Wow and Iconic London’s Triple Threat). When applied to my brunette lashes, the reddy-tinge is subtle.

“Not a difference that stops you in your tracks but still makes an impact. When compared with black mascara, my eyes certainly look softer, warmer, and the green flecks were definitely smidge brighter.”

Praised as a confidence booster, customers have been raving about this mascara with one revealing how people are stunned to discover their lashes are genuine. They said: “I had so many compliments, people ask me if they are my real eyelashes. Gives me so much confidence.”

Another fan of Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara said: “This mascara is the best product ever! I have brown eyes but have all the colours and they all make my eyes pop. The only thing missing is a really dark navy/midnight blue one.”

However, some users felt that the coloured mascaras weren’t as vibrant as they could be, particularly the green and burgundy shades. One customer noted: “The mascara is amazing, however, it’s just the colour that isn’t too prominent.

“I have the green and burgundy, and they both look like pure black, the green especially! The burgundy has the slightest colour.”
