A cleaning expert has shared a simple way to remove rust from bathroom towel radiators in seconds – and all you need is an unusual kitchen staple and some aluminium foil

Bathroom towel radiators are becoming a household staple. They’re perfect for drying your towels after a bath or shower, and their design allows you to hang multiple wet items without cramming them onto a standard radiator. In smaller bathrooms, they also serve as a source of warmth, ensuring you’re not shivering in the winter when you disrobe for a shower or step onto the chilly floor after waking up for a midnight loo visit.

However, because towel radiators are often laden with damp towels and exposed to steam from your shower or bath, they’re susceptible to an issue most radiators don’t face – rust. Typically made of metal, these radiators are coated with a protective layer designed to prevent rust. However, small pockets of rust can form in the corners and crevices where the bars meet the frame.

If you’ve spotted rust on your radiator, fear not. A cleaning expert on social media has shared a brilliant trick to remove the rust in seconds – using a common condiment and some kitchen foil.

An Instagram video shows the cleaning influencer applying tomato ketchup to the radiator’s rusted parts. After waiting a few minutes, she takes a scrunched-up ball of kitchen foil and rubs it over the ketchup.

She then uses a clean cloth to wipe away the excess ketchup, leaving her radiator looking as good as new.

Ketchup is effective at removing rust due to its acidic nature, which loosens the oxidised metal and allows it to flake off. While ketchup does the job well, you could substitute it for another acidic product – like white vinegar or lemon juice – if you didn’t want to squander a decent bottle of Heinz on your radiator.

The post left commenters gobsmacked by the trick. Many expressed their surprise at the idea of using ketchup to remove rust, and others said they would be trying it out as soon as possible.

One individual commented: “Definitely going to try this, thank you!”.

Another chimed in: “Brilliant Idea! Will give this a go.”

As always when you’re using a product for something other than it’s intended purpose, it’s advised to just use it on a small area first to avoid causing damage.
