Meghan Markle was once married to American film producer Trevor Engelson, and one detail from their wedding left guests amused as they asked ‘is she kidding?’

Before Meghan Markle became globally recognised as the American actress who married Prince Harry, she walked down the aisle once before.

The Duchess of Sussex tied the knot with American film producer Trevor Engelson back in August 2011, after a chance meeting in a bar when she was just 23.

Despite their marriage ending in divorce just two years later, it’s believed their relationship was largely positive for many years.

Little is known about the ins and outs of their relationship, but some intriguing details about their wedding have previously come to light, thanks in part to Meghan’s role in the US series Suits which led to brief coverage by the Hollywood Reporter.

Despite her fame being relatively modest at the time, Meghan made a rather strict request of her wedding guests, much to their amusement, the Express reports.

In her book ‘The Palace Papers’, Tina Brown shares a quote from a guest who attended the 2011 nuptials. According to Brown, the guest revealed: “The only jarring note is that Meghan sent out a note requesting ‘no social media, please’.”

“We were all laughing because she had been on Suits for a few months and at that point, we were like, is she kidding me? She was like, ‘I’m a really big actress’.”

Meghan and Trevor parted ways in 2013 citing “irreconcilable differences”, with their divorce finalised the following year.

This was a full four years before Meghan Markle graced the aisle once more to wed Prince Harry in Windsor, following their whirlwind love affair. Meghan bid farewell to her role on Suits to marry the youngest son of King Charles.

The pair had been together for less than two years when Harry popped the question at their Kensington Palace residence, with their nuptials taking place less than a year later.

Although Meghan was warmly received into the Royal family, her tenure as a working Royal was short-lived. Both she and Harry stepped back from Royal duties and relocated to Montecito in California.

On 8 January 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shocked the world by announcing their decision to step down as senior working royals.

Just a few days later, on 13 January, a royal gathering took place at Sandringham to discuss the matter in what has since been referred to as the “Sandringham Summit”, led by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The meeting saw the late monarch, King Charles, Prince William and Harry in attendance, however Meghan was notably absent.

At the time, it was reported that the Sussexes didn’t deem it “necessary for the duchess to join”.

After the “summit”, the Queen issued a statement saying: “Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.

“Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”
