Andrew Mountbatten Windsor has been slammed by an American television host after it was announced he’d been stripped of all royal titles due to his links with Jeffrey Epstein
Andrew Mountbatten Windsor has been dealt another major blow. The disgraced former Duke of York is now living life as a private citizen, having been stripped of all royal titles.
Last week, Buckingham Palace issued an extremely rare and historic statement, revealing that King Charles had removed the remaining titles Andrew had, including his Prince title, which he received at birth.
Weeks prior, he announced he would stop using his Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh as the scandals surrounding him had been “distracting” from the work of The Royal Family.
He was also evicted from his home, Royal Lodge, on the Windsor Great Park Estate, which he had moved into following the death of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Instead, the man formerly known as Prince Andrew will live on the private Sandringham estate and receive an allowance from the King.
The bold move came after his links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew was accused of having sex with a then-17-year-old Virginia Giuffre in March 2001.
Ms Giuffre claimed she had been trafficked by Epstein and his girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell and allegedly had sex with Andrew after meeting him at Tape nightclub in London.
She alleged that Epstein had paid her $15,000 after sleeping with Andrew. The royal vehemently denies the allegations, and during an interview with BBC’s Newsnight, he said he had no recollection of ever meeting Virginia. But Buckingham Palace considers that there have been “serious lapses in judgement”.
After it emerged that Defence Secretary John Healey stated that his government department was “working to remove” Andrew’s military title of Vice Admiral, which he was awarded in 2015, a US television star took aim at the former royal.
Saturday Night Live star Michael Che addressed the scandal during the Weekend Update segment. He said: “Prince Andrew has been stripped of his royal title of prince due to his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein. And Andrew says he can only become a prince again if he gets a kiss from a young princess.”
His comment appeared to reference the allegations made by the late Ms Giuffre. Virginia tragically took her own life in April at her home in Neergabby, Western Australia, at the age of 41. Her dad initially refused to accept her death as suicide and believed that “somebody got to her”.
On Thursday night, Buckingham Palace said: “His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence.
“Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him. Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
