Aldi has changed the packaging on its own-label toothbrushes.
The supermarket has replaced the plastic and card packaging with a cardboard alternative, to make it easier for people to recycle. The change applies to Aldi two-packs of Dentitex Soft and Whitening toothbrushes. The change will help remove an estimated 17 tonnes of plastic packaging per year.
Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, said: “Reducing plastic is a huge priority for us at Aldi, and we know how important it is to our customers too. We are continuously looking for innovative ways to modify our packaging, and making this change on our toothbrushes is another step forward in our ongoing work to remove plastic where possible.”
It comes after Aldi announced a trial of double toilet rolls across select stores. This has reduced the size of the packaging and will help to remove 60 tonnes of plastic packaging a year if it’s rolled out to all stores. The trial is taking place in the West Midlands, East Midlands and Yorkshire, with double toilet rolls available to buy in four, six, eight and twelve packs. It could then be rolled out to more stores across the UK if successful.
It comes after Aldi announced last September that it will be selling more of its fruit and veg items as loose produce rather than in bags in select stores. This included loose garlic, limes, lemons and oranges. The supermarket chain already offers loose produce options on a number of ranges, including potatoes, peppers and avocadoes.
Aldi has also removed “use by” dates from its fresh milk – with customers urged to use the sniff test to judge if the product is ok to consume. The supermarket still uses “best before” dates – except for filtered milk – but hopes the change is preventing milk from being thrown away unnecessarily. Aldi is looking to halve its food waste by 2030.
