A lawn expert has shared the four lawn blunders you shouldn’t make if you want the most gorgeous grass on your street this spring and summer time – and he’s learned from experience
It’s almost the time of year you want to be able to show off your garden, and an expert has shared four mistakes you need to avoid if you want gorgeous grass this summer.
It’s been a rather wet year so far, and as a result, you may not have even done your first lawn trim of 2024 because you’re fearful of ruining your grass. But when the weather warms up, Ken, landscaper and founder of DIY Lawn Expert, has shared four mistakes you shouldn’t be making. “Two years ago I had the worst lawn on the street, now I have one of the best”, he boasted, explaining he wants to help others to achieve the same transformation, reports The Express.
Overwatering
It’s rainy already, and if you water your lawn on top of that, it can leave your grass vulnerable to disease. Ken said: “It’s tempting to start watering in early spring if it hasn’t rained in a few days, but there is usually plenty of moisture in the ground at this time of year to keep your lawn healthy.” As the weather gets warmer, you can water your garden once a week.
Not taking care of your tools
Check on your equipment to check that you’re set for the year because if lawn mower blades are blunt, it’ll mean that your mower is inefficient making your lawn prone to weeds and disease. Ken recommended giving your lawn mower a “tune-up” or an “oil change”, ensuring it’s “squeak-free”.
Heavily fertilising the lawn too soon
“Too much fertiliser in the spring will cause a flush of growth at the expense of root development and can lead to disease and weed problems”, Ken warned. You should wait to fertilise the lawn once the ground is not frozen and the soil temperature is 18C. The grass should be actively growing, and you should be able to easily stick a rake into the ground with little resistance.
Not applying a herbicide to deal with weeds
Spring is the best time to try and prevent weeds so you don’t have to spend the rest of the year dealing with them. Using a herbicide as soon as possible can limit the damage weeds can do to your lawn. Ken said the best time to apply is “when soil temperatures reach 10C or when the forsythia bushes are blooming in the spring”.
