Prince Andrew has been stripped of his HRH status and his Prince title by his brother King Charles III, and a royal expert has now shared how the disgraced royal will have to treat his daughters
Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is now confronting a significant shift in his relationship with his daughters. The individual formerly known as Prince Andrew currently sits eighth in the line of succession to the British throne, despite having been stripped of all his Royal titles.
It was revealed yesterday that the King had formally removed his Royal Highness status and his Prince title, which he held from birth. Charles, Andrew’s elder brother, enacted the unprecedented decision through Letters Patent. The move follows Andrew’s embroilment in controversy stemming from his association with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
He issued a Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm – a legal instrument authorised by the monarch. Published in The Gazette, the UK’s official public record, by the Crown Office, it confirms that Andrew no longer has the right to be a prince or use the style ‘Royal Highness’.
The notice, published on Wednesday, stated: “THE KING has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”, reports the Mirror.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman, author of Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story, has now revealed how Andrew must interact with his family going forward. When questioned whether he will be required to bow to his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, he stated: “Yes, he probably will.”
He suggested that Andrew is reportedly unlikely to accept this “happily” and is probably dreading the occasion when he will be publicly referred to simply as Andrew, stripped of his Prince title. As he no longer holds the rank of prince or duke, Royal protocol requires that Andrew, now a private citizen, must bow to members of the Royal Family who still possess their titles.
Discussing Charles’ decision regarding titles on the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential Show, Robert explained: “The King has exercised his Royal Prerogative with parliamentary and government approval; he’s talked to the Prime Minister about this.”
He characterised Charles as “the fountain of justice,” noting that the monarch’s decision had been made following consultation at the highest level. Whilst Andrew faces scandal, Beatrice and Eugenie’s titles remain intact due to their birthright.
“They are still Princesses and HRH because they are the children of the son of a reigning Monarch,” Robert explained.
He continued: “All along, the King and other members of the family have been concerned that the sins of the family do not befall them. They are blameless, they have led a pretty upright life and are level-headed and very nice young women.”
However, Beatrice and Eugenie are unlikely to assume Royal duties unless specifically requested by His Majesty, as they are “essentially private citizens who are related to the King and occasionally turn up at royal events.”
Their titles, he noted, are safeguarded under King George V’s 1917 Letters Patent. Andrew stepped down from his Royal duties in 2019 after being accused by Virginia Giuffre of having sex with her in March 2001, when she was only 17.
She alleged that she had been trafficked by Epstein and his girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell. Virginia claimed that the pair took her to Tramp nightclub in London, where she met Andrew and later slept with him that night.
She alleged that Epstein paid her $15,000 after her encounter with Andrew. During a BBC Newsnight interview in 2019, Andrew strongly denied the allegations and told presenter Emily Maitlis he had no memory of meeting Virginia.
Andrew continues to vehemently deny all accusations against him.
