Princess Beatrice, sister of Princess Eugenie, brushed off the ongoing scandal surrounding her father Andrew Mountbatten Windsor to make her first public charity appearance on Monday

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie should have their royal titles stripped — for their own benefit, according to a veteran journalist.

But Amanda Platell’s bizarre claims have today been blasted as critics have called them “astonishing,” “mean-spirited” and “ridiculous”. The reporter had argued Beatrice and Eugenie will likely suffer “scrutiny, tears and then most likely abject humiliation” following the controversy surrounding their father, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

He had been stripped of his titles and honours last month, and was evicted from Royal Lodge for a move to an outbuilding on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Andrew, 65, denies all accusation of wrongdoing.

Amanda, a journalist with huge experience covering all news including royal affairs, believes this could have a detrimental impact on Andrew’s daughters. She wrote: “Removing the Princesses’ royal titles would be the kindest thing to do for them —since, as Beatrice’s Saudi jaunt proves, their HRH status will only end in scrutiny, tears and then most likely abject humiliation.

“It may sound cruel, but let me explain. The photographs of Beatrice that emerged this week – taken just days before it was announced her father would be stripped of his royal titles and honours and ordered to leave his longtime residence, Royal Lodge – prove that, in a modern Britain, it is no longer possible to pursue both royal duty and lucrative business interests – especially where foreign autocracies are involved.”

Amanda, writing in her column for the Daily Mail, refers to images taken of Beatrice, 37, at an event for “women business leaders” in Saudi Arabia last month. However, Amanda’s claims these pictures were bad publicity — at a time when Andrew was under the spotlight — have been widely slammed today.

One royal fan took aim at Amanda, writing: “Oh, for goodness’ sake, this is getting ridiculous. They’ve done nothing wrong — leave them alone.” Another branded Amanda as “mean-spirited” while a third said: “For goodness sake leave the girls alone. He’s lost everything — they should not be punished for his stupidity.”

One fan said: “They have done nothing wrong.” Another posted: “They haven’t hurt anyone and have always been very respectful of the monarchy” amid a barrage of criticism Amanda faced.

Beatrice, who has two daughters, is a successful entrepreneur, and is involved in software companies. She was in Saudi Arabia for business meetings, furthering her blossoming endeavours.

And yesterday when the mum made her first public charity appearance since Andrew was stripped of his titles, Beatrice brushed off the controversy. She toured the Borne research laboratories at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where she gave birth to her youngest child Athena several weeks prematurely in January.
