This Christmas we’ll be swapping our mulled wine for something a little different, as Aldi launches a brand new sparkling red wine into its middle aisle – and it’s only £8 a bottle
As we head towards December, our attention is starting to turn towards stocking up on those hosting essentials. Although Christmas is always a great time to indulge in something a little more luxurious, some occasions call for something tasty (and affordable) you can pick up whilst rushing round the shops.
Which is why Aldi’s brand new Specially Selected Sparkling Shiraz is the perfect pick, priced at just £7.99 per 35cl bottle and hailed by fans as a “party starter” and Aldi’s “best kept secret.” Whether you’re looking for something to bring to an office party, need a bottle to take to your family gathering, or want something on hand for your next dinner party, it’s the perfect pick – and it might just edge out mulled wine as our new favourite festive tipple.

It’s already been a hit with wine lovers, with Instagram wine reviewer Tom Tryon saying it’s a real “party starter” and will be the “viral drink of Christmas”. Tom also said: “Move over mulled wine, this is what you should be serving your guests!”
Apart from being much easier to prepare than mulled wine – no heating, no slicing up orange slices or ladling it out of the pan – the Specially Selected Sparkling Shiraz has all the flavour of a classic red wine. With a medium body and notes of juicy cherries, red currants and hints of chocolate liqueurs, it takes everything shiraz fans love and adds a refreshing lift of bubbles.
The Sparkling Shiraz hails from the South Australia region and is non-vintage, pairing perfectly with aperitifs or roast meats which makes it ideal for drinking over the festive season. It arrives in a cork-stoppered bottle, and is best served chilled, so you can grab it straight from the fridge without having to wait for it to adjust to room temperature like other reds.
You can pick up a bottle of the Specially Selected Sparkling Shiraz from Aldi’s middle aisle now. Alternatively, head to Laithwaites, which stocks a wide selection of sparkling red wines to suit all budgets. From the £6.99 L’Occhiolino Semi-Sparkling Red to the Champagne Bollinger La Côte aux Enfants 2013 which is from £780 a bottle, there’s one to suit every type of hosting.
Alternatively, the Waitrose Cellar stocks Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Shiraz NV. You can pick it up for £12.50 a bottle, grab a case of six bottles for £75, or get a huge 12-bottle case for £150.
