A driver allegedly Tasered a man moments after ‘knocking a woman over’ in Upminster this afternoon (November 11). Police were called to Stewart Avenue at around 4.20pm today (November 11) amid reports of a car failing to stop following a crash.
A pedestrian in her 50s was hit outside a restaurant minutes earlier and required treatment from paramedics. Soon after, a man in his 50s was struck by a Taser.
Neither he or the injured woman were taken to hospital. The Metropolitan Police say a man, allegedly the driver and the one who used the Taser, was arrested nearby on suspicion of causing injury via road traffic collision, failure to stop, grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm.
He remains in police custody this evening, the force confirmed. Witnesses are urged to get in touch via 101 as soon as possible.
Upminster residents have been told to expect an increased police presence over the coming days.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers responded to reports of a car failing to stop following a collision in Stewart Avenue, Upminster at around 16:20hrs on Tuesday, 11 November. A pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was treated at the scene by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.
“In a separate incident after the collision, a man also in his 50s, was injured by a non-police Taser. He too was treated by the London Ambulance Service. Neither him or the woman were taken to hospital.
“A man who is believed to be both the driver of the vehicle and the one who used the Taser remains in police custody. He was swiftly arrested nearby on suspicion of causing injury via road traffic collision, failure to stop, grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm.”
The London Ambulance Service has been contacted for more information.
