Sainsbury’s has issued an update for any shoppers who have a Nectar Card and regularly buy fuel from an Esso petrol station
Sainsbury’s has issued a crucial update for customers who use their Nectar Card when purchasing fuel at an Esso petrol station. The supermarket is encouraging shoppers to ensure they are scanning the barcode of their Nectar Card to correctly accumulate their Nectar points when buying fuel.
This announcement follows Sainsbury’s disclosure last month that they would be updating the Nectar app to feature a QR code, rather than the traditional barcode, leading to some customers expressing “confusion” about the change.
However, Sainsbury’s has now clarified to shoppers that they will still need to use the traditional barcode in their Nectar Card app to continue collecting points when purchasing fuel from an Esso petrol station. In an email to Nectar Card holders, Sainsbury’s stated: “You can still collect Nectar points at Esso, but you need to make sure you’re scanning your barcode.
“We’ve made some updates to the Nectar app, and you’ll now see a QR code where the barcode used to be. But here’s the important bit: Esso tills still need a barcode to scan your Nectar card.”
To find the barcode in the Nectar app, Sainsbury’s advised shoppers to update their Nectar Card app to the latest version. Customers should then tap their card on the home screen of the Nectar Card app before swiping left to view their barcode, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The supermarket confirmed that after recent updates, Nectar Card holders will no longer be able to view their barcode via their Apple or Google Wallet, and must now use the Nectar Card app to access it instead.
The alterations to the Nectar Card scheme seemed to spark bewilderment amongst shoppers last month, with some criticising the supermarket for the ‘tedious’ modifications.
On X, one customer contacted Sainsbury’s requesting “clarity” about the updates, writing: “Confusion reigns.”
Meanwhile, another shopper commented: “Just received a lengthy email telling me how to access Nectar points. Tedious and unnecessary change re bar codes, swiping etc. don’t think I will bother.”
A Nectar spokesperson previously informed the Manchester Evening News: “We have introduced QR codes as a new, more secure way for customers to collect and spend their Nectar points. Security is extremely important to us and we have a range of measures which help to safeguard our customer accounts.”
